Job Overview:
The position of National Volunteer for the United Nations, focusing on Social & Behaviour Change (SBC), is critical in the context of the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The volunteer will be responsible for enhancing community engagement and risk communication efforts to combat the spread of the Ebola virus. This role involves working directly within health zones to support the implementation of community-based interventions aimed at increasing awareness and understanding of Ebola, as well as promoting preventive measures. The volunteer will collaborate with local health authorities and community organizations to ensure effective communication strategies are in place, thereby fostering trust and cooperation among the affected populations. The overarching goal is to maintain a high level of community knowledge about Ebola and to facilitate community-led initiatives that contribute to the overall response efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The National Volunteer will undertake a variety of tasks under the supervision of the SBC Administrator. Key responsibilities include:
  • Collaborating with the SBC Administrator to plan and implement Community Engagement and Risk Communication (CREC) activities in response to the Ebola outbreak.
  • Participating in CREC pillar meetings of the Ebola Response Committee within the health zone.
  • Ensuring that data related to partner interventions in the Ebola response is consolidated and tracked within the monitoring and evaluation system.
  • Working with local stakeholders to implement community engagement interventions effectively.
  • Updating the communication channel directory monthly, including contacts of partners and allies.
  • Attending all relevant meetings related to the Ebola response to advocate for the CREC pillar in decision-making processes.
  • Regularly reporting on interventions, successes, and challenges to the Chief Medical Officer and CREC Coordination at the zonal level. The volunteer's objectives will include maintaining community knowledge of Ebola at 90%, strengthening the capacity of community actors and organizations, supporting regular social analyses through data collection, documenting best practices in SBC, and submitting monthly analytical reports on SBC/CREC interventions.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups. A background in public health, social sciences, or a related field is preferred. Additionally, candidates should exhibit adaptability, flexibility, and a solution-oriented mindset. Integrity, respect for ethics, and appreciation for diversity are essential values for this role. Experience in community engagement, health promotion, or emergency response will be advantageous.

Educational Background:
A minimum of a bachelor's degree in public health, social sciences, or a related field is required. Candidates with advanced degrees or specialized training in health communication, community development, or related areas will be given preference. Relevant certifications in health promotion or community engagement methodologies are also beneficial.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 1-2 years of experience in community engagement, health promotion, or related fields. Experience working in emergency response situations, particularly in health crises such as Ebola outbreaks, is highly desirable. Familiarity with the local context and previous work with community organizations or health authorities will be considered an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in French is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Proficiency in English is a plus and will enhance communication with international partners and stakeholders. Knowledge of local languages spoken in the affected areas will be beneficial for community engagement.

Additional Notes:
This position is based in Bunia, within the framework of activities related to the preparation, monitoring, and response to the Ebola virus disease. The National Volunteers will work closely with local communities, health authorities, and implementation partners to support public health interventions.
