Job Overview:
The Senior Consultant will play a crucial role in supporting UNEP's initiatives aimed at promoting low-carbon and climate-resilient buildings, particularly in Africa and South and South-East Asia. This position involves providing technical, coordination, and project implementation support for various country-level activities that focus on sustainable building practices, resource-efficient construction, and urban cooling solutions. The consultant will be responsible for ensuring that project activities are effectively coordinated and implemented, while also engaging with stakeholders to promote awareness and collaboration on these critical issues. The role requires a deep understanding of sustainable building practices and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring that all deliverables are met on time and to a high standard. The consultant will also be expected to conduct research and prepare technical documents that contribute to UNEP's knowledge base and support its mission of fostering sustainable development.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Consultant's duties and responsibilities include:
  • Project Coordination and Administrative Support: - Support the daily coordination of project activities, ensuring smooth operations. - Organize meetings, workshops, webinars, and consultations, preparing necessary materials such as agendas and minutes. - Facilitate communication with governments, partners, and stakeholders to ensure alignment and collaboration.
  • Project Implementation Support: - Monitor the implementation of project activities, tracking deliverables and timelines. - Review and compile technical and administrative outputs from partners, ensuring quality control. - Maintain comprehensive project documentation and filing systems.
  • Research and Technical Support: - Conduct thorough research on sustainable building practices and materials, focusing on climate resilience and resource efficiency. - Prepare technical briefs, concept notes, and knowledge products that support project objectives. - Assist in data collection and analysis related to building and cooling activities.
  • Communications and Outreach: - Document project activities and success stories to enhance visibility and stakeholder engagement. - Support outreach efforts for Buildings and Cooling initiatives and GlobalABC activities.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: - Facilitate communication with national and local governments, partners, and experts. - Coordinate consultations and workshops to gather input and foster collaboration.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: - Prepare progress and activity reports, ensuring compliance with donor reporting requirements. - Track project indicators and maintain monitoring tools to assess project impact.
  • Event and Knowledge Management Support: - Organize capacity-building activities and training sessions, ensuring effective logistics and coordination. - Maintain databases and knowledge management resources to support ongoing learning and development.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires an advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in fields such as architecture, civil engineering, environmental science, or economics, with a specialization in sustainable buildings and construction. Candidates should have at least 10 years of professional experience in project management and technical assistance related to sustainable building practices at the national or city level. A strong understanding of the context in Africa and South Asia regarding sustainable construction, cooling, and the private sector value chain of building materials is essential. Familiarity with UN processes and experience working with UN agencies are desirable qualifications.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in relevant fields such as architecture, civil engineering, industrial or mechanical engineering, environmental science, or economics. Specialization in sustainable buildings and construction, resource efficiency, circularity, climate change, and energy efficiency is preferred, as these areas are critical to the role's responsibilities.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in project management and technical assistance, specifically in sustainable building and construction policies. Candidates should have a proven track record of working at the national or city level, demonstrating their ability to navigate complex project environments and engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Languages:
Fluency in written and spoken English is essential for this position. Knowledge of additional UN languages is considered an advantage, as it may facilitate communication with a broader range of stakeholders and enhance the consultant's effectiveness in the role.

Additional Notes:
The expected duration of the consultancy is 6 months, with the possibility of renewal based on project needs and performance. This position is remote, allowing for flexibility in work arrangements.
