Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research organization established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. It employs physicists and engineers who utilize the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter. CERN's mission is to advance knowledge and understanding of the universe through groundbreaking research, and it operates in multiple countries, fostering a diverse workforce that is central to its success.
Job Overview: The Engineering Department (EN) at CERN is dedicated to pushing the limits of technology to facilitate research in physics. Within this department, the Cooling and Ventilation (EN-CV) group is tasked with the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of cooling and ventilation systems for large energy physics accelerators and technical facilities. The successful candidate will join the Methods, Store and Electrical Section (CES), focusing on the operation and maintenance of water treatment systems. This role requires a proactive individual specialized in industrial water treatment systems, contributing to the analysis, optimization, and development of these systems to ensure performance, reliability, and compliance with environmental and safety standards. The position offers a unique opportunity to work in one of the world's most complex scientific installations, contributing to sustainable cooling and ventilation solutions that enhance energy savings and recovery.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Chemical engineer" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Technical Engineer include studying, designing, and validating the performance of new water treatment installations or upgrading existing systems. The engineer will contribute to water treatment contract management, producing technical specifications and documentation for tendering procedures. They will lead technical investigations and root cause analyses for complex issues affecting water treatment systems. Additionally, the engineer will plan, coordinate, and oversee preventive and corrective maintenance activities using the CMMS system, ensuring alignment with operational needs. Monitoring system performance and reporting on progress, schedule, and costs is essential. The role also involves coordinating contractors’ activities for maintenance and installation work, ensuring compliance with technical standards and safety requirements. The engineer must ensure that all technical documentation is complete, structured, and up to date, adhering to quality standards.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field. Demonstrated experience in the operation, maintenance, and optimization of water treatment systems, particularly in demineralized water production, is essential. Proven experience in the water treatment of cooling circuits, including water chemistry aspects, is required. Experience in technical coordination of external contractors, use of CMMS tools, and low-voltage electrical systems is also necessary. Additional experience in analyzing and troubleshooting technical systems and contract management would be advantageous.
Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field is required for this position. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary for understanding the complexities of water treatment systems and their applications in cooling and ventilation installations.
Experience: Candidates should have substantial experience in the operation, maintenance, and optimization of water treatment systems, particularly those related to cooling circuits. Experience in managing contracts and coordinating external contractors is also important. Familiarity with CMMS tools and low-voltage electrical systems will be beneficial, as will experience in troubleshooting and analyzing technical systems.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language being essential. This bilingual requirement ensures effective communication within the diverse workforce at CERN.
Additional Notes: The position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the role is fully onsite. The position involves participation in regular stand-by duties, including nights, Sundays, and official holidays, as well as work in radiation areas and underground installations. Candidates must possess a valid driving license and may be required to work during nights and holidays as needed. The job entails exposure to various occupational health risks, and selected candidates must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.
