Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
  • It is located in Geneva, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the world. The organization operates in multiple countries, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration among diverse professionals from various fields, including engineering, technical, scientific, and administrative disciplines. CERN's mission is to push the frontiers of science and technology, contributing to our understanding of the universe through cutting-edge research and development.

Job Overview:
As an Electrical Designer within the Electrical Design and Documentation Office (EN-EL-DDO) at CERN, you will play a crucial role in the design and documentation of electrical systems for various strategic projects. Your work will involve collaborating with senior design managers and contributing to significant projects such as the electrical consolidation of the North Area, SPS LV electrical substations, and the renovation of obsolete medium-voltage protection relays in the LHC. You will be responsible for designing low voltage distribution networks, conducting equipment sizing, performing protection studies, and executing lighting studies. This position offers the opportunity to take on projects of increasing complexity, allowing you to develop your skills and expertise in electrical engineering.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Your primary responsibilities will include performing short-circuit calculations, conducting protection coordination and selectivity studies, designing electrical power distribution systems and circuits, preparing calculation reports, lighting studies, and earthing studies. You will also be tasked with producing electrical design drawings, including single-line diagrams, and preparing bills of materials for electrical equipment and installations. Additionally, you will work closely with senior designers to ensure that all designs meet the required standards and specifications, while also contributing to the overall success of the projects you are involved in.

Required Qualifications:
To be considered for this position, you must have a professional background in Electrical Engineering or a related field. You should possess proven hands-on experience in the design of low voltage distribution networks, including LV calculation notes, equipment dimensioning, selectivity studies, and protection. Experience in short circuit calculations and selectivity studies is essential. You should also have a solid understanding of LV standards, protection methods, and safety networks, as well as knowledge of different types of earthing systems. Familiarity with low voltage design calculation tools such as ElecCalc or Caneco, and proficiency in AutoCAD or similar software are required. Beneficial skills include experience in designing lighting systems using DIALux and secondary design with E-PLAN or similar software.

Educational Background:
Candidates must hold either a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience, or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. It is important that applicants have not previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience for candidates with a Master's degree, while those with a PhD should have no more than 3 years of experience. Proven experience in the design of low voltage distribution networks and short circuit calculations is essential for success in this role.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French as part of their professional development.

Additional Notes:
This position is fully onsite and has a contract duration of 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The target start date for this role is September 1, 202
  • The job involves working in radiation areas and performing interventions in underground installations, so a valid driving license is required. The compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 6,372 to 7,004 Swiss Francs, which is tax-free, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances. Additionally, there is a relocation package available, and opportunities for on-the-job and formal training, including language classes.
