Job Overview: The Business Development Manager will play a crucial role in leading strategic fundraising, donor engagement, and business development efforts for the Somalia/Somaliland Country Office. This position is pivotal in driving donor intelligence gathering, identifying and securing new funding opportunities, diversifying funding streams, and enhancing WHH's positioning within the Somali humanitarian and development landscape. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and owning a comprehensive fundraising strategy, maintaining the funding pipeline, and engaging with various stakeholders to ensure the success of fundraising initiatives. This role requires a proactive approach to identifying funding opportunities and building relationships with potential donors, including individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Collaborate with the director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Country Director to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising/business continuity strategy for the Country Office.
Maintain and regularly update the funding pipeline, tracking opportunities and proposal statuses.
Identify and monitor relevant upcoming funding opportunities through donor intelligence gathering and nurturing partner relationships.
Develop and maintain tools, guidelines, and templates for donor intelligence information.
Lead preparatory actions for anticipated funding opportunities, including forming consortia with relevant partners and preparing teaming agreements.
Facilitate donor and partner visits to WHH Somalia/Somaliland operating areas, showcasing achievements and areas needing additional funding.
Oversee proposal development processes, including managing timelines and coordinating inputs, acting as the primary author of proposals for new business.
Collate evidence briefs, capacity statements, and related materials to support proposal development.
Identify and cultivate relationships with potential donors, focusing on diversification, including non-traditional donors and foundations. 1
Support evidence-gathering exercises as required to strengthen proposals and funding applications.
Required Qualifications:
Professional qualification with additional certification or vocational training, or equivalent relevant experience.
5–7 years of relevant professional experience working in the Global South, with at least 5 years in the Somali context.
Demonstrated field experience in the Somali region, with a strong understanding of humanitarian and development coordination structures and aid architecture.
Proven track record of securing institutional funding from major bilateral and multilateral donors.
Strong familiarity with the Somali funding landscape, including established, new, and emerging donors.
Demonstrated experience in resilience programming in dryland contexts, including climate adaptation, livelihoods, and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security-programming" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">food security programming.
Willingness and medical fitness to receive required vaccinations for international travel and deployment.
Recognition of the growing value of data in the field and eagerness to incorporate data-informed approaches into work.
Educational Background: A relevant degree in international development, business administration, or a related field is required. Additional certifications or vocational training in fundraising, project management, or related areas will be considered an asset.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 5–7 years of relevant professional experience, particularly in the Global South, with a strong emphasis on the Somali context. Experience in securing funding from institutional donors and familiarity with the Somali humanitarian landscape is crucial.
Languages: Excellent command of English, both written and spoken, is mandatory. Knowledge of Somali or other relevant languages would be considered an advantage.
Additional Notes: The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of one year and good prospects for extension. The role may require frequent travel to Somalia and will be based in Nairobi, Hargeisa, Dubai, or another strategic location relevant to the Somali aid industry.
