Job Overview: As the Data Science Manager for Product Analytics, you will lead a team of data scientists responsible for providing insights that guide strategies and tactics aligned with the Foundation's vision. Your role will involve managing a team of approximately seven data scientists, ensuring the timely delivery of accurate quantitative data and insights that inform product decisions and assess the impact of product development. You will collaborate with product managers, designers, engineers, and other stakeholders to produce actionable data and insights. The position requires a strong focus on creating shared data processes and procedures to ensure data accuracy and consistent reporting. Additionally, you will support the design of data products and tools that enhance data accessibility for stakeholders and decision-makers. The role also emphasizes the importance of mentoring team members and fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture within the team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Ensure timely delivery of accurate quantitative data and insights to inform strategy and guide product decisions.
Manage a team of data scientists, nurturing a collaborative and inclusive culture.
Mentor team members on critical thinking, data-informed storytelling, and technical skills.
Partner with Experiment Platform and Data Engineering teams to build and maintain accessible data products.
Collaborate with product teams and colleagues in the Research & Decision Science group to promote data-informed product development.
Continuously develop and improve experimentation and measurement best practices, product health metrics, visualizations, and reports for easier interpretation and increased accessibility.
Balance the need for rapid operation in a fast-changing environment with appropriate rigor in data analysis.
Proven experience collaborating with product development teams in a fast-paced environment.
Prior experience as a people manager, demonstrating effective leadership skills.
A demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity in the workplace.
Familiarity with large-scale data processing and storage tools such as Hadoop, Hive, Presto, and Spark.
Educational Background: A relevant educational background in data science, statistics, computer science, or a related field is essential for this position. Advanced degrees (Master's or Ph.D.) are preferred but not mandatory, provided the candidate has substantial experience in the field.
Experience: Candidates should possess significant experience in data science, particularly in managing teams and working with product development teams. Experience in experimental design, statistical analysis, and data processing is crucial. A strong background in mentoring and developing team members is also important.
Languages: While the primary language for communication within the organization is English, proficiency in additional languages is considered a plus, especially for candidates working in diverse international teams. Fluency in languages relevant to Wikimedia's global audience may enhance collaboration and outreach efforts.
Additional Notes: This position is remote-first, allowing for flexibility in work location. Candidates must be located within the UTC+1 to UTC-8 time zones to facilitate synchronous work and meetings. The role may require travel for offsite meetings and conferences, up to four times a year. The Wikimedia Foundation offers competitive salaries that are equitable and consistent with its values and culture. The anticipated annual pay range for applicants based in the United States is between $132,439 and $192,799, with adjustments made for applicants located outside the U.S. based on their country of hire.
