Job Overview:
The Movement Communications Specialist for Africa will play a crucial role in enhancing communication and collaboration within the Wikimedia movement, particularly focusing on the African region. Duties and Responsibilities:
The Movement Communications Specialist will have a variety of responsibilities, including:
  • Supporting the establishment of connections and fostering dialogue within the African communities of the Wikimedia movement, ensuring that trust and understanding are built through effective communication.
  • Collaborating with team members to assist in the deployment of product and technology features on relevant Wikimedia platforms.
  • Monitoring community channels to stay informed about news, incidents, and requests, thereby keeping a pulse on the movement's dynamics.
  • Mapping the editor communities and the broader Wikimedia movement in Africa, focusing on Product and Tech engagement, identifying users with extended rights, and understanding community needs and priorities.
  • Informing communities about the Foundation's work in alignment with insights from Movement Communications.
  • Supporting the Movement Communications team by taking on additional assignments as directed by the manager.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for this position should possess excellent written English skills and fluency in at least one other African language, which would be advantageous. A solid understanding of the dynamics, policies, cultures, and channels of Wikimedia communities is essential. The ideal candidate should be a natural collaborator who enjoys teamwork and brings a supportive attitude to group efforts. Strong organizational skills are necessary for managing logistical tasks such as scheduling, organizing meetings, and taking notes.
