Job Overview: The Head of the Radionuclide Unit will play a pivotal role in leading and managing the operations of the unit within the Engineering and Development Section of the International Monitoring Systems Division. This position requires a proactive leader who can foster a collaborative work environment while ensuring that the unit's work aligns with the strategic priorities of the organization. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of processes and procedures that enhance the efficiency of the radionuclide monitoring network. They will provide scientific and technical guidance on radionuclide projects and ensure the effective operation of monitoring stations globally. The role also involves liaising with various stakeholders, including government officials and contractors, to ensure the successful execution of the unit's objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Head of the Radionuclide Unit include:
Providing leadership and guidance to the Radionuclide Unit, fostering a collaborative and team-oriented work environment.
Supervising, coaching, mentoring, and evaluating staff while coordinating work activities.
Planning, implementing, and monitoring the Unit’s work programme within the allocated budget, ensuring alignment with the priorities of the Section, Division, and the Commission.
Leading the development and implementation of processes, procedures, and reporting mechanisms for the effective operation of the IMS network.
Providing scientific, engineering, and technical advice on all matters related to the radionuclide component of the IMS and managing radionuclide projects as required.
Overseeing multiple concurrent, complex radionuclide projects globally across the IMS Network.
Conducting site surveys, site preparation, installation, status assessments, certification, revalidation, and post-certification support of radionuclide stations and laboratories.
Identifying required actions and coordinating solutions to ensure the proper functioning of radionuclide facilities.
Supporting radionuclide monitoring station operations with an emphasis on long-term data quality and availability. 1
Liaising with government officials, designated institutions, and contractors as required. 1
Coordinating and participating in scientific, engineering, and technical meetings aimed at improving radionuclide facilities' performance. 1
Preparing and presenting materials for Commission meetings, IMS training programmes, and technical workshops and conferences. 1
Collaborating on advanced studies on next-generation radionuclide stations and supporting the development of solutions to enhance the sustainability of the radionuclide network. 1
Performing other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for the Head of the Radionuclide Unit include:
An advanced university degree in nuclear physics, engineering, or a related field.
At least seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in radionuclide monitoring or a related field, preferably with some experience at an international level.
Experience in radionuclide monitoring technology development is desirable.
Demonstrated supervisory and team management experience is essential.
A sound level of judgment, responsibility, and initiative is essential.
Strong ability to communicate effectively in a multicultural environment is essential.
Proven ability to build strategic partnerships and alliances with key stakeholders and partners is essential.
Ability to design and manage complex, result-based technical assistance programmes/projects, preferably in the radionuclide field, is essential.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in nuclear physics, engineering, or a related field. This educational background is crucial for understanding the technical and scientific aspects of radionuclide monitoring and the operations of the International Monitoring Systems Division.
Experience: Candidates should have at least seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in radionuclide monitoring or a related field. This experience should ideally include a mix of both national and international exposure, with a focus on leadership roles that demonstrate the ability to manage teams and projects effectively. Experience in developing radionuclide monitoring technologies is also desirable, as is a proven track record in project management.
Languages: Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential for this position. Knowledge of other official CTBTO languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered desirable and would be an asset in this multicultural work environment.
