The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was established in 1972 and has since become the global authority that sets the environmental agenda. UNEP promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The mission of UNEP is to provide leadership and encourage partnerships in caring for the environment, inspiring nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, UNEP operates through its divisions, regional offices, liaison offices, and a growing network of collaborating centres of excellence, employing a diverse workforce dedicated to environmental sustainability across various countries.

Job Overview:
The position of United Nations Volunteer (UNV) is integral to UNEP's project aimed at informing policy on climate, nature, and pollution through the strengthening of national, regional, and global indicator frameworks, as well as environmental economic accounting. This role focuses on enhancing the capacity of selected countries to produce climate change and disaster-related statistics, with a particular emphasis on integrating a gender perspective into data collection and analysis. The volunteer will work closely with the Programme Management Officer (Statistician) and collaborate with colleagues from the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) to facilitate communication and coordination among various stakeholders. The volunteer will be responsible for mapping available climate change and gender data sources, organizing workshops, managing project communications, and preparing reports, all aimed at developing a pilot list of gender-sensitive climate change indicators that will inform better adaptation and mitigation policies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the UN Volunteer include facilitating communication between implementing entities and national consultants in pilot countries such as Cameroon, Colombia, Jordan, and Tanzania. The volunteer will analyze the results of data mapping, organize national workshops, prepare relevant documentation, manage the project webpage, and support the organization of meetings and calls related to project activities. Additionally, the volunteer will maintain ongoing communication with project stakeholders, develop draft annual progress reports, and manage other relevant tasks. The expected deliverables include a pilot list of core gender-sensitive climate change indicators, methodological guidance, and reports on climate change and gender, along with global webinars to enhance national capacities.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for this position should possess strong analytical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a demonstrated capacity for teamwork. The ideal candidate should be proactive, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks effectively. Familiarity with climate change, gender issues, and statistical methodologies is highly desirable. The ability to work in a multicultural environment and adapt to various working conditions is essential. Candidates should also exhibit professionalism, creativity, and a commitment to the mission of UNEP.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is required for this position, typically including a degree in environmental science, statistics, social sciences, or a related field. Advanced degrees or specialized training in climate change, gender studies, or data analysis may be advantageous and are often preferred.

Experience:
The position requires a level of experience that demonstrates the candidate's ability to engage in data analysis, project management, and stakeholder communication. Previous experience working with international organizations, particularly in the context of climate change or gender statistics, is highly valued. Candidates should have a proven track record of successfully managing projects or initiatives that involve collaboration across different sectors and countries.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of UNEP. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those spoken in the pilot countries (such as French or Spanish), is considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
The contract for this UN Volunteer position is for a specified period, with the possibility of extensions based on funding availability, operational necessity, and satisfactory performance. The role is full-time and requires a commitment to living and working in Nairobi, Kenya, which may involve adapting to challenging living conditions. The UN Volunteer will receive a Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) to cover basic needs, along with life, health, and disability insurance.
