Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Library Cataloguer include:
  • Curation and cataloguing of CERN scientific publications, primarily in INSPIRE and the CERN Document Server (CDS). This involves cataloguing various document types such as scientific articles, preprints, conference papers, and theses using JSON and MARC formats.
  • Reviewing, checking, and updating existing records to ensure the accuracy, consistency, and quality of metadata.
  • Contributing to the maintenance, update, and documentation of cataloguing and curation procedures.
  • Analyzing existing cataloguing practices and proposing improvements in line with international standards.
  • Participating in the migration to a new institutional repository, which includes cleaning, harmonizing, and improving metadata, identifying and resolving metadata issues, and contributing to the definition of requirements for the migration.
  • Engaging in broader activities of the Archives & Library Section, such as supporting researchers at the Library service desk, participating in Archives re-boxing activities, and carrying out additional tasks related to Library and Archives operations as needed.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Library & Information Science or a related field. The highest educational qualification required is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree. Applicants must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract, and those without a university degree or with a PhD are not eligible for this position. Strong interest or experience in metadata management is essential, along with completion of in-depth cataloguing coursework as part of academic studies. Familiarity with digital repositories and library management systems is also important.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Library & Information Science or a related field. Candidates should have completed relevant coursework in cataloguing and metadata management, which is critical for performing the duties associated with this role effectively.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a maximum of two years of professional experience in the field of Library & Information Science or a related area. This experience should ideally include practical involvement in cataloguing and metadata management, as well as familiarity with library services and user support.

Languages:
Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this position. Familiarity with additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.

Compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 5266 to 5793 Swiss Francs, which is tax-free, along with 30 days of paid leave per year and additional benefits such as comprehensive health insurance, family allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances. On-the-job training and formal training, including language classes, will also be provided.
