Job Overview:
The AI/ML Specialist will play a pivotal role in advancing the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) initiatives within the WHO European Region. This position involves spearheading the development of innovative applications that leverage cutting-edge software engineering practices. The specialist will be responsible for guiding technical divisions through complex challenges, promoting innovative solutions, and ensuring that AI initiatives align with WHO's strategic goals. The role requires a hands-on approach to lead the definition and implementation of AI/ML projects, set project priorities, and define work plans. The specialist will also oversee the full development cycle of AI projects, from data acquisition to deployment and monitoring, while ensuring best practices in software engineering are upheld.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The AI/ML Specialist will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including: leading the definition and implementation of AI/ML initiatives; setting technical direction for data integration initiatives; designing and implementing AI prototypes and pilots; overseeing the full development cycle of AI projects; guiding the development of internal and external applications; developing and managing cloud-based solutions; optimizing cloud resources; mentoring a team of AI and software professionals; collaborating with other teams to integrate AI solutions; managing large datasets for AI model training; ensuring ongoing performance and accuracy of deployed models; establishing quality assurance protocols; staying updated with AI/ML trends; fostering a culture of innovation; advocating for ethical AI applications; communicating effectively with stakeholders; managing project budgets; identifying and mitigating risks; and promoting high staff performance through effective teamwork.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in software engineering, computer science, or a relevant discipline. Desirable qualifications include certifications in DevOps, React, Python, or other relevant areas. Essential experience includes at least seven years of progressive experience in software engineering and architecture, deploying AI models in the Cloud, developing automated analytical pipelines, and managing complex applications and services. Candidates should have a theoretical understanding of algorithms and data structures, practical experience in AI/ML techniques, and proficiency in modern programming languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript/Node.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree in software engineering, computer science, or a related field is essential for this position. Additional certifications in relevant areas such as DevOps, React, or Python are desirable and can enhance a candidate's profile.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of relevant experience, with a focus on software engineering, AI model deployment, and managing complex applications. Candidates should have a proven track record in developing cloud-native applications and integrating AI solutions, as well as experience in data engineering and working with large datasets.

Languages:
Expert knowledge of English is essential for this role. Intermediate knowledge of additional languages such as French, Russian, or German is desirable and can be beneficial in a multilingual work environment.
