Job Overview:
As a firefighter at CERN, you will be an integral part of the Fire and Rescue Service, working in a dynamic environment that requires 24/7 readiness. Your role will involve responding to emergencies, conducting safety inspections, and participating in specialized rescue operations. You will undergo a comprehensive 10-week on-the-job training program tailored to CERN's unique environment, which will equip you with the necessary skills to handle various emergency situations effectively. Your responsibilities will include maintaining firefighting equipment, supporting fire prevention initiatives, and collaborating with both French and Swiss emergency services. Continuous training will be a key aspect of your role, ensuring that you remain at peak operational performance while engaging in regular drills and professional development activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Your duties will encompass a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: performing firefighting and medical emergency response operations; managing emergency dispatch activities from the Safety Control Room; conducting technical inspections and safety checks to ensure compliance with fire regulations; providing specialized assistance in confined space operations and hazardous material handling; participating in training exercises and drills; engaging in fire safety awareness initiatives; maintaining firefighting and medical emergency equipment; contributing to ongoing projects within the Fire and Rescue Service; assisting with administrative duties; and participating in physical training programs to maintain fitness levels required for the role.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, you must hold official diplomas and/or certifications confirming your education and training as a firefighter. These qualifications should be issued by a recognized public body or a private entity authorized to act on behalf of a public service. Additionally, you should possess a valid C driving license and be prepared to work in various challenging conditions, including night shifts and emergency situations.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have completed formal education and training in firefighting, which includes obtaining relevant diplomas and certifications. This educational background should be recognized by public authorities or accredited institutions in the field of fire safety and emergency response.

Experience:
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience working as a professional firefighter within a public or company fire service. Experience in control room operations or ambulance settings is considered an advantage, as it indicates familiarity with emergency response protocols and teamwork in high-pressure situations.

Languages:
Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language. The ability to understand and communicate effectively in both languages during everyday and emergency situations is highly advantageous. CERN offers language courses to help employees quickly master both French and English, enhancing communication within the diverse workforce.

Additional Notes:
This position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, with full onsite presence required. The role involves participation in regular standby duties, including nights, weekends, and official holidays, as well as work in radiation areas and underground installations. Candidates must obtain medical clearance due to the occupational health risks associated with the position.
