Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position under the direct supervision of the Assistant Representative at the Syria Country Office is designed to support the Damascus Office in enhancing program delivery, data analysis, and operational efficiency through digital tools and Artificial Intelligence (AI). This internship aims to engage local Syrian youth in UNFPA's digital transformation efforts while providing them with practical experience that complements their academic studies. Interns will assist in developing innovative digital solutions, including AI applications, and will gain exposure to the UN system. The program emphasizes youth engagement and gender equality in technology and humanitarian work, fostering an environment where interns can learn and contribute meaningfully to UNFPA's mission.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for several key areas: A. Digital Innovation & AI Support - Assist in identifying opportunities for integrating AI tools such as data analysis, automation, and chatbot support. - Support the development of digital solutions tailored to program and operational needs. - Contribute to the creation of data visualization, dashboards, and reporting tools. B. Programme Support - Assist in data collection, cleaning, and analysis related to UNFPA programs. - Support monitoring and evaluation activities utilizing digital tools. - Contribute to knowledge management and documentation efforts. C. Communications & Knowledge Management - Support the creation of digital content for social media, reports, and briefs. - Assist in documenting innovation initiatives and lessons learned. - Contribute to internal knowledge-sharing platforms. - Conduct research on emerging AI trends, digital policy frameworks, data governance, and ethical AI practices. D. Capacity Building & Learning - Participate in relevant training and learning sessions offered by UNFPA. - Engage in discussions and workshops focused on innovation. - Support peer learning activities among UNFPA-led youth facilities. Expected deliverables include producing or supporting at least one AI or digital innovation prototype/tool, monthly progress reports documenting tasks and learning outcomes, and a final internship report detailing achievements, challenges, and recommendations.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this internship, candidates must meet several educational and eligibility requirements: a. Be enrolled in a first university degree program (such as a bachelor’s degree or equivalent) and have completed one full academic year; b. Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree program (such as a master’s program or higher); c. Have recently graduated with a university degree as defined above and, if selected, must start the internship within one year of graduation; or d. Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional trainee program and undertake the internship as part of this program. Other eligibility requirements include demonstrating interest in the field of development, proficiency in at least one of the working languages of the United Nations (Arabic and English), and the ability to adapt to new environments while maintaining good working relations with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Educational Background:
Candidates should be university students or recent graduates in fields such as Computer Science, Data Science, IT, Engineering, or related disciplines. Alternatively, candidates from Social Sciences with strong digital and technical skills are also eligible. The educational background should reflect a solid understanding of digital tools and their applications in development contexts.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a demonstrated interest in AI, digital tools, or innovation. Basic experience with data analysis tools such as Excel, Python, or Power BI is essential, along with familiarity with digital platforms or content creation. Some experience working with development agencies, even in a volunteer capacity, is advantageous. Fluency in English is mandatory, and knowledge of additional languages is considered an asset. Strong analytical and writing skills, along with initiative and sound judgment, are also important for success in this role.

Languages:
Proficiency in at least one of the working languages of the United Nations, specifically Arabic and English, is mandatory. Knowledge of additional languages is considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's profile.

Additional Notes:
This internship is unpaid, and interns do not receive a salary or any other form of remuneration from UNFPA. The costs associated with participation in the program must be covered either by the nominating institution or by the interns themselves, who will need to manage their living expenses, accommodation, travel, and other requirements. However, interns may receive a stipend to help cover basic daily expenses if they are not financially supported by any institution or program. Additionally, applicants must have medical insurance for the duration of the internship, and proof of insurance will need to be submitted before the internship begins.
