UN Women, established in July 2010, is the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. It was created as part of the UN reform agenda to consolidate resources and mandates for greater impact in gender equality and women's empowerment. UN Women merges the work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system that focused on gender issues, namely DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW, and UNIFEM. The organization operates in multiple countries, including Senegal, where it works closely with the government, civil society organizations, and other UN agencies to promote gender equality and women's empowerment. UN Women Senegal is part of the West and Central Africa Regional Office (WCARO) and focuses on thematic priorities such as governance, women's leadership, economic empowerment, and ending violence against women and girls (EVAW).

Job Overview:
The intern will support the Ending Violence Against Women (EVAW) team at UN Women Senegal, reporting directly to the EVAW coordinator. The primary functions of this position include assisting in the identification and mapping of psychologists and psycho-social workers, developing a database of experts and potential partners, and drafting technical sheets and guidance notes related to psycho-social support. The intern will also participate in EVAW activities, meetings, and workshops, providing operational and coordination support as needed. This role is designed to enhance the intern's knowledge of stakeholder mapping, partnership-building, and the operational aspects of working within UN Women, while also developing research, analytical, and communication skills in a multicultural setting.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist in identifying and mapping psychologists, psycho-social workers, and organizations involved in psycho-social support for survivors in Senegal.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive database of experts and potential partners in the field.
  • Identify existing tools, protocols, and practices utilized in psycho-social support services.
  • Draft technical sheets, guidance notes, and reference materials related to psycho-social support.
  • Contribute to the development and documentation of practical tools for field teams.
  • Participate in EVAW activities, meetings, workshops, and related events.
  • Provide operational and coordination support for various activities as required.
  • Engage in learning opportunities to enhance knowledge of gender issues and psycho-social support mechanisms.

Required Qualifications:
  • University studies in Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Social Sciences, Gender and Development, or related psycho-social disciplines.
  • Enrollment in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent) or a postgraduate professional traineeship program that is part of a degree program.
  • Recent graduates must start the internship within two years of graduation.
  • Experience in gender studies-related issues is a plus.
  • Knowledge of development issues in Senegal and familiarity with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 5, is advantageous.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have completed university studies in relevant fields such as Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Social Sciences, or Gender and Development. They should be enrolled in a graduate program or a postgraduate professional traineeship program that is part of their degree requirements. Recent graduates must have completed their degree within the last two years to be eligible for the internship.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have some experience related to gender studies and development issues, particularly in the context of Senegal. Familiarity with the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 5, is considered an asset. Previous experience in psycho-social support or related fields will be beneficial.

Languages:
Excellent written and oral communication skills in both French and English are mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an advantage but is not required.

Additional Notes:
The internship is unpaid, but interns who do not receive financial support from other sources will receive a stipend from UN Women to help cover basic living costs during the internship. The position is part-time and may require flexibility in working hours to accommodate various activities and events.
