Job Overview: The Information AnalystIntern position is designed to provide analytical support to the Judicial Support and Cooperation Section (JSCS) of the IIIM. The intern will engage in open-source research and investigation, monitoring, data processing, and contextual analysis to assist in the collection and assessment of information relevant to criminal investigations. This internship offers a unique opportunity to develop analytical and data management skills while gaining firsthand experience in the workings of a UN international accountability mechanism. The intern will report to the P2 Associate Information Analyst and will be involved in supporting various national jurisdictions in their legal processes. The role is expected to be full-time, with a commitment of 40 hours per week, and may include hybrid or remote work modalities depending on discussions with the successful candidate. The internship is anticipated to last between three to six months, starting in early summer, with specific dates to be determined in consultation with the intern.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Information Analyst Intern include conducting contextual open-source searches to support ongoing criminal investigations, focusing on incident verification and contextual background. The intern will monitor specific open sources for updates relevant to active domestic criminal investigations and assist in analyzing material and records pertinent to these investigations. This includes reviewing records, locations, and preparing timelines. The intern will also be responsible for weekly open-source monitoring of political and judicial developments relevant to the JSCS's work and reporting findings. Data entry and metadata support will be required, including entering and reviewing record-related information regarding materials collected or preserved by the IIIM. Additionally, the intern will contribute to JSCS workflows by assisting in informal translations and summarizing relevant Arabic-language materials, as well as taking minutes during internal meetings as needed.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Candidates should be pursuing or have pursued their degree in fields related to the internship, such as criminology, law, Middle Eastern studies, conflict or security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security studies, international relations, human rights, criminal law, political/social science, or a related area. While professional work experience is not required, a relevant field of study is essential. Candidates must also have good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS Outlook, and MS Teams.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes being a student in the final year of a first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or being enrolled in or having completed a Master's or Ph.D. program. Candidates must have a strong academic foundation in areas related to the internship, such as criminology, law, or international relations, and should be prepared to provide official documentation of their academic status.
Experience: While no professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should demonstrate a strong academic background in relevant fields. Knowledge of criminal accountability in the Syrian context is desirable, and applicants should be able to provide examples of how they meet this criterion. Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable, and familiarity with an additional official UN language is considered an advantage. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, and should be prepared to engage with Arabic-language materials as part of their responsibilities.
Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid, and candidates are responsible for all related expenses, including travel, visas, accommodation, and living costs. Interns must keep all unpublished information obtained during the internship confidential and are not permitted to publish any reports or papers based on such information without explicit written authorization. The internship is expected to last between three to six months, with regular working hours from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday to Friday. Interns are required to secure adequate insurance coverage and must sign a statement confirming their understanding of the conditions of service.
