Job Overview:
The Associate Interpreter/Translator will play a crucial role in facilitating communication during the Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan. This position requires the incumbent to provide accurate translations and simultaneous interpretations between English and Arabic, ensuring that all communications are sensitive to gender perspectives, particularly in contexts involving sexual and gender-based violence. The role involves participating in field missions, where the interpreter will conduct interviews with victims, witnesses, and sources, translating their statements accurately and maintaining confidentiality. The position demands a high level of professionalism and the ability to work under pressure, as the incumbent will be dealing with sensitive information and vulnerable populations. The Associate Interpreter/Translator is expected to assist in the production of verbatim translations of various documents, including witness statements and media articles, and to perform any additional tasks as required by the mission.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Associate Interpreter/Translator will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Provide accurate translation and simultaneous interpretation from English to Arabic and vice versa, ensuring the integration of a gender perspective in all communications.
  • Participate in field missions, conducting interviews with victims, witnesses, and sources, and interpreting their statements accurately.
  • Assist in producing verbatim translations of written and oral witness statements, media articles, and other relevant documents.
  • Maintain strict security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security and confidentiality of all information handled during the mission.
  • Perform any other related tasks as assigned by the Coordinator of the Secretariat or the Chief of Investigations Support Section.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of translation and interpretation theories and practices. They should demonstrate the ability to identify and analyze issues effectively and participate in problem resolution. The role requires excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to work collaboratively within a team. The incumbent should also exhibit professionalism, efficiency, and a commitment to gender equality in all aspects of their work. Additionally, candidates should be able to manage conflicting priorities and demonstrate persistence in overcoming challenges.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree in translation, interpretation, languages, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree in the mentioned fields combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. This educational background ensures that the candidate has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to perform effectively in this role.

Experience:
A minimum of 2 years of work experience in translation and/or interpretation is required, which may include academic research work. Experience within the United Nations Common Systems or regional organizations is desirable, particularly in providing translation or interpretation for human rights investigations or related subjects. Relevant working experience in the region is also considered an asset, as it may enhance the candidate's understanding of the cultural and social dynamics at play.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Arabic, both oral and written, is mandatory for this position. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency at UN Level III in all language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking). Knowledge of another UN official language is considered an advantage, as it may facilitate communication in a multilingual environment and enhance the candidate's versatility.
