Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research organization established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. It employs physicists and engineers who utilize the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter. CERN has been at the forefront of scientific discovery since its inception, employing thousands of staff and collaborating with numerous international partners across various countries. The organization is dedicated to advancing knowledge in particle physics and fostering innovation in technology and engineering.
Job Overview: As a Polymers and Composites Technician at CERN, you will play a crucial role within the Polymer Laboratory of the Superconducting Magnet Technology (SMT) Section. This position is hands-on and involves the manufacturing of superconducting coils and other essential components that are integral to the CERN accelerator complex. You will apply advanced composite techniques, including vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM), bonding, and prepreg processing. Your contributions will directly impact the development and optimization of innovative materials and fabrication methods, enhancing performance and reliability in cutting-edge systems and components. This role not only requires technical skills but also offers the opportunity to engage in collaborative projects that push the boundaries of material science and engineering.
Duties and Responsibilities: The primary duties and responsibilities of the Polymers and Composites Technician include:
Contributing to the operation of the Polymer Laboratory by manufacturing key components for the CERN accelerator complex and experiments.
Supporting on-site interventions for troubleshooting and repair of complex systems.
Participating in the construction of superconducting magnets, including the operation and maintenance of polymer processing equipment such as VARTM systems.
Supporting the development, characterization, and testing of polymer materials and composite solutions for various applications, including the fabrication of mock-ups and prototypes.
Preparing and maintaining manufacturing procedures and work instructions to ensure high standards of quality and traceability in production processes.
Handling the procurement of materials and tooling for the Polymer Laboratory and maintaining the chemical inventory in compliance with safety and quality requirements.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a technical certificate or general secondary education, or equivalent relevant experience in Material Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. Additionally, hands-on experience in polymers and composites processing, including bonding and gluing techniques, is essential. Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of electromechanical equipment used in resin transfer or similar processes is also required. The ability to develop and adapt manufacturing techniques, tooling, and mock-ups for first-of-a-kind applications is crucial. Experience in producing and updating technical documentation, as well as construction and assembly of mechanical and hydraulic systems, will be considered an asset. Proficiency with mechanical workshop tools and conventional (non-CNC) machining techniques is advantageous, along with experience in procurement follow-up and inventory management.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a technical certificate or general secondary education in Material Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field. Candidates with equivalent relevant experience will also be considered. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the principles of material science and engineering necessary for the role.
Experience: The position requires hands-on experience in the processing of polymers and composites, particularly in bonding and gluing techniques. Candidates should have experience in the operation and maintenance of electromechanical equipment used in resin transfer processes or similar applications. The ability to develop and adapt manufacturing techniques and tooling for innovative applications is critical. Experience in producing and updating technical documentation is also necessary, along with familiarity in the construction and assembly of mechanical and hydraulic systems. Proficiency with mechanical workshop tools and conventional machining techniques will be beneficial, as will experience in procurement follow-up and inventory management.
Languages: Candidates must have spoken and written proficiency in English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication within the diverse international environment at CERN.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the position is fully onsite. Candidates must possess a valid driving license and may be required to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed by the organization. Shift work and stand-by duty may also be required. Due to the occupational health risks associated with this position, selected candidates must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed. The job grade for this position is 3-4, and it falls under the field of Material and Surface Science.
