Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) was established in 1964 and is a part of the United Nations Secretariat. Its mission is to promote the integration of developing countries into the world economy, ensuring that trade and development are mutually reinforcing. UNCTAD operates in over 190 countries and has a workforce of approximately 1,000 employees. The organization focuses on various aspects of trade, investment, and sustainable development, providing research, policy analysis, and technical assistance to developing nations.

Job Overview:
The internship opportunity at UNCTAD is designed to provide students or recent graduates with practical experience in the field of international trade and development. Interns are expected to work full-time, either remotely or in-person in Geneva, for a duration of four months starting in May. The role involves supporting the Division on International Trade and Commodities (DITC) by engaging in data collection, thematic research, and assisting in the organization of intergovernmental meetings. Interns will report directly to the Economic Affairs Officer of the Commodities Branch and will be involved in critical analysis of commodity markets, particularly focusing on energy transition minerals. This position aims to enhance the intern's educational experience while contributing to the UN's mission of fostering sustainable development through trade.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Interns will be responsible for collecting, compiling, and validating both quantitative and qualitative data on commodity markets, focusing on production, trade flows, and policy developments in the minerals and metals sector. They will analyze critical energy transition minerals to identify market and policy drivers, evaluate impacts on exporting and importing countries, and monitor export restrictions. Interns will maintain a dedicated database and ensure the accuracy of all information.
  • Thematic Research and Synthesis: Conduct targeted research based on the analyzed data to support the preparation of policy briefs, background papers, and publications on critical minerals for development in resource-rich countries. This includes contributing to research on value addition, diversification, and benefit sharing, as well as compiling best practices for traceability and transparency across the minerals value chain.
  • Intergovernmental Meetings: Assist in organizing and preparing for intergovernmental meetings, including the Global Commodities Forum and the Multi-year Expert Meeting on Commodities and Development. This involves identifying potential speakers, contributing to logistical arrangements, and preparing background materials and presentations based on the intern's analytical work.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent) or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level). Interns should be computer literate in standard software applications and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations. They must also have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs. No prior work experience is required, but a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a Master's or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion must be provided with the application. A field of study related to international trade, economics, or a similar discipline is preferred, as it will enhance the intern's contributions to the UNCTAD's objectives.

Experience:
While no professional work experience is required, applicants should have relevant academic training or coursework that aligns with the internship's focus. This could include studies in economics, international relations, trade, or environmental science, particularly as they relate to commodities and sustainable development.

Languages:
Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory. Knowledge of any other UN official languages is considered desirable and may enhance the candidate's application.

Additional Notes:
This internship is unpaid, and all costs related to travel, accommodation, medical insurance, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern. Interns must ensure they have the appropriate visa and work authorization if they are not citizens or permanent residents of Switzerland. The internship is full-time, requiring a commitment of 40 hours per week. The United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process.
