Job Overview:
The Accountant position is integral to the financial operations of the EpiC project in Jamaica, which is part of a larger global health initiative funded by the United States Government. The role involves performing essential accounting functions, including the recording, classification, examination, and analysis of financial transactions. The Accountant will be responsible for reviewing and consolidating financial reports on a monthly basis, processing journal entries, managing cash receipts, and ensuring compliance with both Jamaican laws and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This position requires a proactive approach to financial management, including participation in audits and system upgrades, and the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Accountant will perform routine accounting tasks in accordance with established procedures, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost accounting. Key responsibilities include analyzing budget forecasts, compiling complex data, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and donor requirements. The Accountant will develop and maintain effective working relationships with regulated industries and management, interpret discrepancies in financial data, and produce various financial reports. Additional duties include supporting cash management activities, leading month-end closing reports, processing vendor payments, and assisting with internal and external audit requests. The role also involves maintaining data integrity, preparing written findings, and communicating structured information clearly to diverse audiences.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a general knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable information technology systems. The role requires the ability to compile, monitor, and audit financial statements for accuracy and integrity. Strong problem-solving skills are essential, as well as the ability to prepare financial reports and maintain data integrity. Effective communication skills are necessary to establish working relationships and convey information clearly. The Accountant should also demonstrate an understanding of internal control systems and be able to prepare technical products following standard guidelines.

Educational Background:
A Bachelor's Degree or its international equivalent in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field is required for this position. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary for understanding complex financial systems and accounting practices.

Experience:
Typically, candidates should have 0 to 3 years of experience in customer service and maintaining ledger accounts. Experience in ensuring compliance with internal controls is also necessary. Familiarity with computerized accounting software and proficiency in MS Office, particularly advanced Excel skills, are required. Previous work experience in a non-governmental organization (NGO) is preferred, as it provides valuable context for the financial operations within the sector.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with the ability to read, write, and speak clearly and professionally. Additional language skills may be beneficial but are not explicitly required for this position.

Additional Notes:
The position is based in Jamaica and is expected to have less than 10% travel requirements. The expected hiring salary range for this role is JMD 3,000,000 - 4,000,000 annually, with considerations for relevant experience and education.
