Job Overview:
The intern will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of the UNFPA 10th Country Programme through the Integrated Field Support and Monitoring and Evaluation Unit at the UNFPA Country Office in Kampala. The intern will work under the supervision of the Deputy Representative and the Programme Specialist for Monitoring, Evaluation, and Knowledge Management. A structured work plan will be established during onboarding, outlining expected achievements and learning objectives. Regular progress meetings will be conducted to ensure the intern receives guidance and support, enhancing their skills in line with UNFPA's mission. The intern's contributions will be vital in strengthening monitoring, reporting, and results tracking, which are essential for the effective delivery of UNFPA's programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern's responsibilities will include supporting the programme team in various capacities:
  • Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting: The intern will assist in the preparation and updating of Annual Work Plans (AWPs) in alignment with donor agreements and the country programme results framework. They will compile, organize, and analyze programme information, preparing tables, summaries, and basic statistical data for planning and reporting. The intern will track programme implementation and results, updating dashboards and project results frameworks, and compile achievements reported by implementing partners. They will also support the preparation of quarterly, annual, and donor reports, contributing to monitoring and evaluation processes in accordance with Results-Based Management (RBM) principles.
  • Knowledge Management and Programme Documentation: The intern will document programme implementation, including key achievements and lessons learned, and maintain updated programme documentation. They will synthesize information for reports, briefs, and knowledge products, and compile relevant data to support advocacy materials.
  • Programme Coordination and Administrative Support: The intern will track action points from meetings and visits, support the coordination of programme events, and provide general administrative support to the team as needed.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate a strong interest in development and possess written and spoken proficiency in English. They should have strong analytical and writing skills, the ability to adapt to new environments, and the capability to establish good working relationships with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Good interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to work harmoniously with staff from different national and cultural backgrounds. Experience working with development agencies, even in a volunteer capacity, is considered an asset. Additionally, candidates must not have immediate family members working for UNFPA to be eligible for the internship.

Educational Background:
Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements at the time of application:
  • Enrollment in a postgraduate degree programme (master’s or higher) in fields such as economics, demography, sociology, or related social sciences at a recognized institution.
  • Enrollment in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (bachelor’s degree or equivalent) at a recognized university.
  • Recent graduates with a university degree (as defined in (1) and (2)) must start the internship within one year of graduation.
  • Enrollment in a postgraduate professional traineeship programme, undertaking the internship as part of this programme.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have some level of experience, particularly in development-related work. This can include volunteer work or internships with development agencies, which would provide valuable insights and skills relevant to the role. The emphasis is on the ability to demonstrate initiative, sound judgment, and the capacity to work effectively in a multicultural environment.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory for this position. While English is the primary language required, knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset, enhancing communication and collaboration within the diverse UNFPA environment.

Additional Notes:
This internship is unpaid, and interns do not receive a salary or remuneration from UNFPA. Costs associated with participation must be covered by the intern or their nominating institution. However, interns may receive a stipend to help with basic daily expenses if not financially supported by any institution. Proof of insurance is required before the internship begins, as UNFPA does not provide medical insurance for interns.
