Job Overview:
The position is located within UNEP's Climate Change Adaptation Unit, specifically in the Adaptation and Resilience Branch, in Nouakchott, Mauritania. The role supports the project 'Strengthening the resilience of ecosystems and populations in four regional hubs in northern Mauritania.' The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of UNEP’s Chief of the Unit and will be responsible for delivering project objectives, providing technical guidance, and ensuring adherence to UNEP's rules and regulations. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders to enhance implementation capacity, improve access to finance and technology, and build resilience against climate change. The incumbent will also monitor project activities, analyze data, and prepare reports to ensure the successful execution of project goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Project Manager include: 1) Project Management and Technical Support: Supporting the delivery of project objectives, providing technical guidance, reviewing country-specific development plans, ensuring adherence to financial regulations, preparing budget estimates, monitoring project progress, and developing information systems for reporting. 2) Adaptation Policy Process Coordination: Drafting terms of reference, policy briefs, and reports; organizing and participating in meetings and workshops; maintaining communication with stakeholders; and ensuring project visibility. 3) Data Analysis: Collecting and analyzing data to identify trends, providing insights through data visualization, and documenting requirements for data analysis. 4) Additional Duties: Performing other related duties as assigned by supervisors that align with project goals.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project management, particularly in climate change adaptation, environment, or sustainable development. Experience in multi-cultural settings and familiarity with the United Nations system are desirable. Candidates should also have experience in national policy development, environmental integration into development planning, and capacity building in environmental management.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in environmental science, economics, social science, project planning and management, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Successful completion of degree and non-degree programs in data analytics or related fields is desirable.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience in project management, including design" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">program design, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting related to climate change adaptation and sustainable development. Experience in understanding Mauritanian ecosystems and their services, as well as experience in national and sector policy development, is highly desirable. Additionally, candidates should have at least two years of experience in data analytics or a related area.

Languages:
English and French are the mandatory working languages for this position, with a required proficiency level of UN Level III for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Arabic is considered a desirable language, with a minimum proficiency of UN Level I.

Additional Notes:
The appointment is for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension based on the continued existence of the mandate and availability of funding. The position is subject to local recruitment, and external candidates selected will be granted a fixed-term appointment limited.
