Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. With over 2,500 employees and thousands of scientists from around the globe, CERN operates in multiple countries and is renowned for its contributions to particle physics and technology. The organization is dedicated to pushing the frontiers of science and technology, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration among a diverse range of professionals, including physicists, engineers, and administrative staff. Diversity is a core value at CERN, and it remains central to its mission and continued success.
Job Overview: The position involves joining the Geodetic Metrology group at CERN, where the successful candidate will contribute to the high-precision metrology and alignment of critical accelerator components for the High-Luminosity LHC project. The role requires working with advanced surveying instruments, sensor networks, and alignment software to achieve sub-millimetre and micrometre-level accuracy in a challenging underground environment. The primary focus will be on supporting the preparation, installation, and commissioning of the Full Remote Adjustment System (FRAS), which includes micrometric sensor deployment and commissioning. The candidate will be expected to prepare the deployment of FRAS system components, install and commission the FRAS systems in the LHC tunnel, and perform high-precision metrology and alignment measurements of components to be installed as part of the HL-LHC project.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of this position include preparing the deployment of FRAS system components, which involves testing alignment equipment, sensors, and associated software. The candidate will also be responsible for installing and commissioning the FRAS systems in the LHC tunnel. Additionally, the role requires performing high-precision metrology and alignment measurements of components that are part of the HL-LHC project. The position may also involve working in radiation areas, conducting interventions in underground installations, and working during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as required by the needs of the organization.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate a strong interest in high precision geodetic or industrial metrology and have experience with the instruments and methods used in high accuracy metrology. A demonstrated curiosity and attention to detail are essential. Knowledge and application of high accuracy survey methods and tools, such as laser trackers and digital and optical levels, are required. Additionally, candidates should have experience in preparing mathematical models and algorithms related to least square adjustment. Familiarity with programming techniques and languages, particularly object-oriented languages and numeric platforms like Matlab and Python, would be advantageous.
Educational Background: The minimum educational requirement for this position is a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Geomatics, Industrial Metrology, or a related field. Applicants without a university degree are not eligible, and those with a PhD are also not eligible for this position.
Experience: Candidates should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in the relevant fields. This experience should be aligned with the requirements of high precision geodetic or industrial metrology.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language. This bilingual capability is essential for effective communication within the organization.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with a possible extension of up to 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the position is fully onsite. The target start date for this role is September 1, 202
The position involves working in radiation areas and may require interventions in underground installations. A valid driving license is necessary, and candidates should be prepared to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. The job reference for this position is BE-GM-HPA-2026-129-GRAE, and it falls under the field of Mechanical Engineering. The compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 5266 to 5793 Swiss Francs, which is tax-free, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, a relocation package, and opportunities for on-the-job and formal training, including language classes.
