Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
It is located in Geneva, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the world. The organization operates in multiple countries, with member states primarily in Europe, and is dedicated to pushing the frontiers of science and technology through innovative research and collaboration.
Job Overview: As a Survey Engineer at CERN, you will be an integral part of the Geodetic Metrology group, focusing on the metrology and alignment of components utilized in particle accelerators. This role requires the use of advanced surveying tools and software to achieve the high precision necessary for CERN's projects. You will have the unique opportunity to work on significant upgrades to the SPS complex, contributing to the North Area Consolidation and TCC2 renovation projects. Your work will involve overseeing the dismantling of existing beamlines and the installation of new ones, scheduled for completion in 2028/202
This position not only demands technical expertise but also offers a collaborative environment where you will engage with interdisciplinary teams and contribute to the development of alignment monitoring systems and in-house surveying software applications.
Duties and Responsibilities: Your primary responsibilities will include performing project follow-ups through participation in coordination meetings, reviewing schedules, and collaborating with various teams. You will prepare and verify the quality of inputs such as theoretical beamline trajectories and installation drawings. Additionally, you will carry out and supervise geometrical measurements at all stages, utilizing standard 3D geodetic techniques, including laser tracker methods. You will coordinate survey activities, manage installation tasks, and oversee alignment processes, ensuring that interventions are prepared and executed effectively. Data processing will be a key aspect of your role, requiring you to use a 3D least-squares adjustment application and conduct advanced stochastic analysis. You will also be responsible for defining strategies for tracing new beamlines and services, contributing to research and development activities, and supervising external contractors and students on technical topics. This position includes team supervision responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of leadership and collaboration.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess experience in high precision geodetic or industrial metrology, including familiarity with the instruments and methods used in high accuracy metrology. Initial experience in coordination, planning, reporting, and quality assurance, as well as supervision, is advantageous. Knowledge of high accuracy survey methods and tools, such as laser trackers and optical levels, is essential. Proficiency in using survey instruments like total stations and 3D laser scanning is required. Additionally, candidates should have a solid understanding of standard adjustment software and data acquisition and processing software, including Python and Matlab. Strong organizational, planning, and control skills, along with the ability to supervise work, are also necessary.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate will have a professional background in Geomatics, Industrial Metrology, or a related field. A Master's degree accompanied by 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience is required, or alternatively, a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. Candidates must also be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
Experience: Candidates should have a solid foundation in high precision geodetic or industrial metrology, with practical experience in the relevant instruments and methods. The role may benefit from initial experience in project coordination, planning, and quality assurance, as well as supervision of teams or projects. The expectation is for candidates to demonstrate a strong understanding of the technical aspects of the role, as well as the ability to manage and lead projects effectively.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language being highly desirable. This bilingual requirement reflects CERN's diverse working environment and the need for effective communication across various teams and projects.
Additional Notes: This position is fully onsite and involves a contract duration of 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the role may require work in radiation areas, as well as interventions in underground installations. A valid driving license is necessary, and candidates should be prepared to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as required by the organization's needs. The job reference for this position is BE-GM-ASG-2026-80-GRAP, and it falls under the field of Mechanical Engineering, benchmark job 200090 - Mechanical Engineer. Compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 6372 to 7004 Swiss Francs, tax-free, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances.
