Job Overview:
The Economic Affairs Officer will be responsible for conducting economic or sector analysis, monitoring economic developments related to financing for sustainable development, and identifying emerging issues of concern to the United Nations. The officer will design and conduct studies on selected economic development issues, draft reports on the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, and develop policy recommendations. The role also involves formulating proposals for development strategies and policies, attending various international, regional, and national meetings, and organizing expert group meetings and seminars on financing for sustainable development. The officer will provide substantive support to intergovernmental bodies and ensure proper follow-up for initiatives related to the Sevilla Platform for Action. This position requires collaboration with junior staff and participation in broader departmental undertakings.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Economic Affairs Officer will undertake a variety of responsibilities including: monitoring economic developments and identifying issues related to financing for sustainable development; designing and conducting studies on economic development topics; drafting reports and policy recommendations; formulating proposals for development strategies; attending meetings to discuss financing issues; organizing expert group meetings and seminars; providing secretariat support to the Sevilla Platform for Action; ensuring substantive support to intergovernmental bodies; representing the FSDO at various meetings; supporting junior staff; and performing administrative tasks necessary for the delivery of the work unit’s services. The officer will also engage in training activities to enhance their skills and knowledge.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, and the application of economic principles in development programs. At least three years of this experience should be specifically in research and policy analysis related to global or regional financing for sustainable development policies. Experience in building strategic partnerships and alliances is desirable, as is experience in servicing or supporting intergovernmental negotiations and discussions.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, and the application of economic principles in development programs. Candidates should have at least three years of experience specifically focused on research and policy analysis concerning global or regional financing for sustainable development policies. Experience in building strategic partnerships and alliances is considered an asset, as well as experience in supporting intergovernmental negotiations.

Languages:
English is required for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is also a working language of the United Nations, and proficiency in French is considered an advantage but not mandatory.
