Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading research institution established in 195
It is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics and technology, employing over 2,500 staff members and collaborating with thousands of scientists from around the world. CERN operates in multiple countries and is dedicated to pushing the frontiers of science and technology, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration.
Job Overview: The position is within the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Group at CERN, which is responsible for the mechanical design, manufacturing, and assembly of accelerator and detector devices. The successful candidate will join the Materials, Metrology and NDT Section, focusing on developing and applying advanced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques. This role is crucial for ensuring the reliability and safety of CERN's cutting-edge physics projects, as it involves inspecting critical materials and assemblies for accelerators and detectors. The engineer will collaborate with an experienced NDT team, optimize inspection techniques, and support the implementation of innovative systems for in-situ inspections.
Duties and Responsibilities: The engineer will be responsible for collaborating with the NDT team to conduct inspection activities using ultrasonic testing, digital radiography, and computed tomography. Key duties include optimizing Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) techniques for medium/thin austenitic welds, developing PAUT probes in an immersion setup, and supporting the development of a mobile system for radiography and tomography. The engineer will also communicate inspection results to project engineers, document testing protocols, and findings, ensuring that all inspections meet the required standards and contribute to the overall safety and reliability of CERN's projects.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should have experience in ultrasonic or digital radiographic techniques for NDT, with a preference for familiarity in both areas. ISO 9712 certifications are advantageous, as is holding a valid certificate for handling X-ray electric generators for industrial radiography from Swiss or French authorities. The role requires strong technical writing skills for procedures and reports, as well as the ability to configure parameters for various PAUT systems and use software for inspection simulation and result visualization.
Educational Background: A Master's degree in Materials Science, Welding Engineering, NDT, or a related field is required, along with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience. Alternatively, a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience is acceptable. Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
Experience: The position requires a professional background in Materials Science, Welding Engineering, or NDT, with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience for Master's degree holders or up to 3 years for PhD holders. Experience in ultrasonic or digital radiographic techniques is essential, and familiarity with material science and welding processes is preferred.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language being a requirement. This bilingual capability is important for effective communication within the diverse CERN community.
Additional Notes: The contract duration is 24 months, with a possible extension of up to 36 months. The position is fully onsite, requiring a commitment of 40 hours per week. The role may involve work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, and may require a valid driving license. Candidates should be prepared to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. The job reference is EN-MME-MM-2026-50-GRAP, and the field of work is Material and Surface Science. The compensation includes a monthly stipend between 6372-7004 Swiss Francs (tax-free), 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, a relocation package, and opportunities for on-the-job and formal training, including language classes.
