Job Overview:
The Geospatial Analyst position at WFP is crucial for analyzing satellite imagery to detect and quantify changes in cropland dynamics, particularly in hard-to-reach areas across West and Central Africa (WCA). This role is essential in providing evidence of existing conflict-related hazards and vulnerabilities, especially in regions where access is limited due to security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security concerns. The analyst will work closely with various partners and stakeholders to implement capacity-building activities and provide technical support to the Senegal country office. The broader context of this role involves addressing the challenges posed by insecurity in WCA, which hampers effective monitoring of agricultural seasons and food security analyses. Duties and Responsibilities:
The Geospatial Analyst will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Analyzing satellite imagery to detect and quantify cropland change dynamics at the locality level in inaccessible areas across WCA.
  • Producing detailed analyses focused on conflict-affected areas, including the Liptako-Gourma region and the Lake Chad Basin.
  • Collaborating with partners and the regional task force on Earth Observation (EO) to enhance the use of satellite data in humanitarian efforts.
  • Conducting capacity-building activities for national governments and local authorities to improve the integration of EO analyses into decision-making processes.
  • Providing operational support to Country Offices on geo-targeting activities based on EO products.
  • Rolling out satellite-based analyses to measure WFP resilience activities and strengthen the capacity of WFP staff and external partners in using satellite imagery.
  • Developing partnerships with key regional stakeholders to improve the integration of EO analyses into humanitarian operations.
  • Participating as the WFP focal point in the West Africa POT taskforce and exploring other applications of satellite imagery relevant to Vulnerability Assessment and Mapping (VAM).
  • Performing additional tasks as required, including travel within the region for up to 30-40% of working time.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong set of qualifications, including proficiency in GIS and geospatial analysis techniques, knowledge of Earth Observation data platforms and processing software, and familiarity with the humanitarian sector's institutional framework. Experience in international organizations, particularly in food security, is preferred. The ability to work with diverse stakeholders, manage tight deadlines, and produce clear reports is essential. Advanced knowledge of programming languages such as JavaScript, Python, and R is also required, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's) in Engineering, Data Science, Remote Sensing, Geographic Sciences, or Agricultural Sciences is required for this position. This educational background ensures that the candidate has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to perform complex analyses and contribute effectively to WFP's mission.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of professional experience in satellite imagery analysis is required. This experience should include working with remote sensing tools and methodologies, as well as a demonstrated ability to apply these skills in a humanitarian context. Experience in capacity strengthening and knowledge of the conflict and security context in the Sahel region are considered advantageous.

Languages:
Fluency in both French and English (level C) is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages relevant to the region may be considered an asset, enhancing communication and collaboration with local partners and stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This position is based in Dakar, Senegal, and is classified as a National Officer role under the SSA contract type. The initial duration of the contract is six months, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and organizational needs. The role is full-time, and candidates should be prepared for potential travel within the Western Africa region.
