Job Overview: The consultant will support UNEP's project titled 'Tackling the environmental drivers, sources and challenges of AMR through the One Health approach.' This position is critical in advancing global efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by integrating environmental considerations into AMR responses, particularly in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region. The consultant will work closely with UNEP's Latin America and the Caribbean Office (LACO) and engage with various stakeholders to facilitate the transformation of systems necessary to mitigate health challenges at the human-animal-plant-environment interface. The role involves providing technical input, analyzing data, and supporting policy engagement to ensure that environmental dimensions are effectively incorporated into AMR strategies and initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for a range of tasks, including:
Providing technical input to the update of the Global Action Plan on AMR and developing its monitoring and evaluation framework, ensuring alignment with a One Health approach.
Analyzing responses to the TrACSS questionnaire to identify trends and gaps in information regarding the environmental dimensions of AMR in the LAC region.
Offering technical and policy expertise on environmental sources and drivers of AMR, including pollution pathways and sustainable production practices.
Supporting UNEP's engagement in the Quadripartite collaboration on AMR by integrating environmental perspectives into joint initiatives.
Mapping opportunities in the LAC region to develop partnerships with governments and stakeholders, and advocating for UNEP's priorities.
Mainstreaming environmental dimensions of AMR within One Health initiatives and supporting resource mobilization efforts.
Managing UNEP's regional AMR project portfolio, ensuring effective coordination and reporting.
Identifying funding opportunities and developing proposals to advance financing and partnerships for AMR initiatives.
Contributing to global advocacy and knowledge management related to AMR and One Health.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, environmental health, veterinary medicine, public health, biology, environmental engineering, or a closely related field. An advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in relevant areas is preferred. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree must have additional qualifying work experience to meet the educational requirements. The consultant should possess excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and be able to articulate messages effectively in a multicultural environment.
Educational Background: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as environmental sciences, environmental health, veterinary medicine, public health, biology, or environmental engineering. An advanced degree in these areas is highly desirable, and candidates with a Bachelor’s degree may substitute two additional years of relevant work experience for the advanced degree requirement.
Experience: The consultant should have at least three to five years of relevant professional experience in international cooperation, environmental policy, public health, or a related field. Experience specifically related to antimicrobial resistance and/or One Health is essential, with a focus on environmental determinants such as pollution and waste management. Proven experience in project management, stakeholder engagement, and resource mobilization is also required. Familiarity with the Latin America and Caribbean region and experience working within the United Nations system are considered assets.
Languages: Fluency in both oral and written English and Spanish is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of another UN language would be an asset, as the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat include English and French.
Additional Notes: The expected duration of the contract is twelve months, with a full-time commitment. The monthly compensation is set at USD $5,500, totaling USD $66,000 for the contract period. The position is home-based, allowing for remote work.
