Job Overview:
The Communication Specialist will play a crucial role in enhancing the visibility and reputation of the Danish Refugee Council in South Sudan. Reporting directly to the director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Country Director, the specialist will be responsible for implementing DRC's communication strategies and ensuring compliance with donor requirements. This position requires a results-driven professional who is passionate about humanitarian response and partnership development. The specialist will work closely with project teams to source content that highlights community needs and DRC's impact, thereby raising the organization's profile among stakeholders, including peer agencies, donors, and local NGOs. The role also involves developing communication materials, managing external communications, and supporting the Country Director in media relations and public events. Overall, the Communication Specialist will contribute significantly to DRC's mission by ensuring that the organization's initiatives and communication goals are effectively communicated both internally and externally.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Communication Specialist will have a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
  • Collaborating with Area and Project Managers to develop and execute communication and visibility plans that comply with donor communications requirements.
  • Drafting communication sections of funding proposals and implementing the communication components of projects.
  • Sourcing content such as videos, photos, and stories that reflect community needs in collaboration with project teams and partners.
  • Supporting the Business Development unit in creating outward-facing products, including concept notes and proposals, while adhering to branding guidelines.
  • Monitoring and analyzing local and international media related to the situation in South Sudan.
  • Producing DRC information and communication materials, including brochures, newsletters, success stories, and blogs.
  • Organizing public events for field teams and the country office.
  • Assisting the Country Director in responding to media requests and drafting press releases.
  • Building relationships with other organizations for joint communication efforts. 1
  • Ensuring DRC branding standards are uniformly implemented and producing a staff newsletter. 1
  • Maintaining regular engagement with HQ communications counterparts and sharing information with the country team. 1
  • Supporting Technical Coordinators and project staff in developing position papers on sectoral issues.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, public relations, or advocacy. A Master’s degree in a related field such as communication, public relations, journalism, or social sciences (including human rights or international development) is considered an added advantage. Additionally, candidates should have a minimum of three years of relevant experience in communication, journalism, project or programme management, campaign management, and advocacy within the INGO or NGO sector. Experience in delivering a range of communications products, including both physical and online content, is essential. Candidates should also demonstrate experience in generating content and storytelling, particularly with an understanding of protection risks and ‘do no harm’ approaches.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, public relations, or advocacy. A Master’s degree in communication, public relations, journalism (print, broadcast, media), or social sciences (human rights, gender/women's studies, international development) is highly desirable and would provide a competitive edge in the application process.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of three years of relevant experience in communication, journalism, project or programme management, campaign management, and advocacy within the INGO or NGO sector. Candidates should have a proven track record of delivering a variety of communications products and should possess desirable experience working in the aid sector. Demonstrated experience in content generation and storytelling, particularly with an understanding of protection risks and the ability to capture program impacts through photography and video, is essential. Experience in data visualization and map design is also beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of Arabic or other local languages is considered an added advantage, as it can enhance communication with local communities and stakeholders.
