Job Overview: The Associate Lawyer position within the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) at EBRD is a pivotal role that supports the bank's mandate to foster sustainable and open market economies across its operational jurisdictions. The OGC is responsible for managing all legal aspects of EBRD's lending and investment transactions, providing legal advice on institutional matters, and supporting policy development through its legal transition program. The Associate will contribute their country, language, and academic knowledge to facilitate the bank's operations, particularly as Belgrade is set to become one of the seven Regional Client Delivery Hubs. This role offers a unique opportunity to engage with diverse legal challenges and contribute to the bank's mission in various countries, including Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, and Serbia.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Associate will be integrated into the OGC’s Banking Operations group, which is responsible for the legal aspects of EBRD’s lending and investment operations. Key responsibilities include conducting legal research, drafting and negotiating legal documentation, and providing legal support for transactions. The Associate will also be expected to monitor ongoing projects, manage multiple activities under tight deadlines, and collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure compliance with legal standards. Additionally, the role involves contributing to the development of legal frameworks and policies that align with EBRD's objectives and operational needs.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a law degree, with a preference for those holding a (post-)graduate degree from a recognized university. A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant work experience as a lawyer in private practice or within an in-house legal team is required. Familiarity with the legal areas pertinent to EBRD's operations, including experience in conducting legal research and drafting legal documents, is essential. Experience in multiple jurisdictions and a background in international development are advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate excellent project management skills, the ability to prioritize tasks effectively, and strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Educational Background: The position requires a law degree from an accredited institution. A (post-)graduate degree in law or a related field is preferred, indicating a higher level of expertise and understanding of complex legal issues relevant to EBRD's operations.
Experience: Candidates should have between 3 to 5 years of professional legal experience, ideally gained in a context that involves international law, finance, or development. Experience working in the EBRD's countries of operations or in multiple jurisdictions is considered an asset, as it demonstrates familiarity with the legal frameworks and challenges in these regions.
Languages: A strong command of written and spoken English is mandatory. Additionally, fluency in one or more of the key languages relevant to the EBRD's operational regions is preferred, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
