Job Overview:
The Epidemiology and Surveillance Specialist will play a crucial role in providing technical support and managing staff involved in the STRengthening Infectious Disease DEtection Systems (STRIDES) project in Liberia. This position requires the specialist to monitor and enhance epidemiological surveillance activities, ensuring effective implementation of strategies for infectious disease detection and surveillance. The specialist will collaborate closely with various ministries, including the Ministries of Health and Fisheries and Livestock, to design and implement robust surveillance strategies. The role involves leading planning and implementation efforts to improve the quality and performance of epidemiology and surveillance interventions, participating in technical meetings, and providing thought leadership at the country level. The specialist will also evaluate program effectiveness and oversee technical aspects of the project, ensuring alignment with national health objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Epidemiology and Surveillance Specialist include providing overall technical direction and guidance on epidemiological surveillance, supporting the design and implementation of surveillance systems, and coordinating with global surveillance teams. The specialist will conduct analyses to identify areas for improvement, develop training materials, and deliver training to various stakeholders. Responsibilities also include monitoring project protocols, maintaining data sets, and ensuring the technical assistance required to fulfill national objectives. The specialist will develop technical briefs and reports, assist in project planning and implementation, and ensure activities are executed according to standard operating procedures. Additionally, the specialist will build productive relationships with national and international organizations and assist in preparing donor reports and presentations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree or its international equivalent in epidemiology, public health, or a related field. The position requires a strong understanding of epidemiological principles and practices, as well as experience in public health programs related to infectious diseases. Proficiency in data quality assurance, data analysis, and interpretation is essential. The ideal candidate should demonstrate knowledge of WHO International Health Regulations and outbreak response, along with experience in training and mentoring staff. Strong communication skills, both oral and written, are necessary, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and database management software.

Educational Background:
A Bachelor's degree in epidemiology, public health, or a related field is required for this position. Candidates with advanced degrees or additional certifications in relevant areas may be preferred, as they can bring enhanced expertise to the role.

Experience:
Typically, candidates should have at least 4 years of relevant experience, which includes both national and international work in epidemiology and public health programs. Experience in controlling infectious diseases, health analysis, and statistics is crucial. Prior work experience in NGOs, government agencies, or private companies is also beneficial, as it provides a well-rounded perspective on public health challenges and solutions.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as the specialist must be able to communicate effectively with clients and staff. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly if they are relevant to the regions served by the organization.

Additional Notes:
This position is full-time and may require travel of 10% to 25%. FHI 360 offers a competitive compensation package, with an expected hiring salary range of USD 19,000 - 22,000 annually.
