Job Overview:
The position of Technical Officer in Comprehensive Abortion Care is critical within the Division of Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Care (PPC) at WHO. The incumbent will play a pivotal role in advancing health equity and human rights through comprehensive abortion care. This role involves serving as a technical and scientific reference for comprehensive abortion care, developing evidence-based tools and resources, and contributing to research priority setting. The officer will also design and implement research and training activities, synthesize evidence, and provide guidance to various stakeholders, including Member States and UN agencies. The position requires a strong commitment to improving the quality of care and ensuring that comprehensive abortion care is recognized as a fundamental aspect of health and human rights.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
  • Serving as a technical and scientific reference in comprehensive abortion care among peers, Member States, and UN agencies.
  • Developing evidence-based tools and resources to support WHO normative products on comprehensive abortion care.
  • Contributing to research priority setting and developing operational and strategic plans for research and development.
  • Designing and implementing research, assessment, and training activities, including developing research protocols and managing research networks.
  • Synthesizing evidence and conducting systematic reviews to inform clinical and managerial guidelines.
  • Providing guidance to counterparts in Member States and collaborating with WHO Regional and Country Offices.
  • Preparing technical progress reports and drafting manuscripts for publication.
  • Collaborating with various stakeholders to generate evidence for increased access to sexual and reproductive health and rights.
  • Undertaking fundraising activities to support the program.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires an advanced university degree in public health, medicine, midwifery, or a related field with specialized training in sexual and reproductive health and rights. Additionally, candidates should possess expert knowledge of comprehensive abortion care and its public health aspects, strong analytical and scientific writing skills, and demonstrated experience in fundraising and partnership management. Strong communication and diplomatic skills are also essential for this role.

Educational Background:
Candidates must hold an advanced university degree in public health, medicine, midwifery, or a related field that includes specialized training related to sexual and reproductive health and rights. Additional advanced specialized training in sexual and reproductive health is desirable but not mandatory.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 7 years of international exposure in research or program management focused on comprehensive abortion care and sexual and reproductive health and rights, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. A minimum of 5 years of direct experience in leading, designing, and coordinating research or implementation projects on comprehensive abortion care is required, along with experience in developing and delivering training materials in this area.

Languages:
Expert knowledge of English is essential for this position. Intermediate knowledge of French is desirable, and proficiency in other UN languages is considered an asset.
