Job Overview: The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Specialist will play a crucial role in the implementation of the project titled 'Strengthening Resilience of Vulnerable Communities in Northern Ghana Through Climate-Resilient Livelihoods and Integrated Environmental Practice.' This project aims to support at least 3000 vulnerable rural households, particularly smallholder farmers, fisherfolk, and pastoralists, by promoting sustainable and climate-resilient interventions. The specialist will provide technical leadership in developing small-scale aquaculture systems, enhancing community capacity, and strengthening fisheries value chains to support sustainable livelihoods in Northern Ghana. The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including local communities, government agencies, and technical experts, to ensure the successful execution of project objectives and adherence to FAO technical standards.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Specialist include leading the implementation of the Fisheries Strategy and Implementation Plan, providing technical guidance on small-scale aquaculture production systems, coordinating activities related to aquaculture production facilities, and overseeing improved fish production practices. The specialist will also engage with community members, support the establishment of aquaculture producer groups, promote women's participation in aquaculture, and facilitate collaboration among fisheries stakeholders. Additionally, the role involves conducting training programs on climate-smart aquaculture, assessing fisheries value chains, supporting fish processing activities, and ensuring effective communication with the Fisheries Commission. Regular field missions will be conducted to monitor project activities, and the specialist will prepare technical reports and document lessons learned from the interventions.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in fisheries biology, coastal development, or social development related to fisheries or an equivalent field. A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in small-scale fisheries and/or aquaculture is required. Candidates must also have a working knowledge of English and be nationals of Ghana. The FAO core competencies expected include a focus on results, teamwork, effective communication, building relationships, and knowledge sharing. Additionally, candidates should have technical skills related to small-scale fisheries and aquaculture, including familiarity with relevant policies and legal frameworks in Ghana.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in fisheries biology, coastal development, or social development in the area of fisheries. Candidates must have their qualifications recognized by an institution accredited in the World Higher Education Database (WHED).
Experience: Candidates should have at least 8 years of relevant experience in small-scale fisheries and/or aquaculture. Experience working in multiple locations or areas within Ghana is preferred, as well as familiarity with fisheries-related policies and legal frameworks. Prior experience working with the FAO or any UN agency, as well as with the government and other relevant institutions in Ghana, will be considered an asset.
Languages: A working knowledge of English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an advantage, particularly if they are relevant to the local context in Ghana.
