Job Overview:
The Associate Interpreter/Translator will play a crucial role in facilitating communication and understanding during investigations related to human rights issues in Belarus. This position requires the incumbent to provide accurate translations and interpretations from and to Russian, ensuring that a gender perspective is integrated into all communications. The role involves participating in field missions, where the interpreter will be responsible for interpreting interviews with victims, witnesses, and sources. The incumbent will also assist in producing verbatim translations of various documents, including written statements and media articles, from English to Russian and vice versa. The position demands a high level of professionalism and the ability to work under pressure, as the interpreter will be involved in sensitive discussions surrounding human rights violations. The Associate Interpreter/Translator will also support outreach programs and perform other related duties as required, contributing to the overall mission of the group.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Associate Interpreter/Translator include:

• Providing accurate translation and interpretation services from/to Russian as required, ensuring that gender-sensitive language is used, particularly in relation to sexual and gender-based violence.
• Participating in field missions and interpreting interviews of victims, witnesses, and sources, ensuring clarity and accuracy in communication.
• Checking verbatim records of meetings to ensure consistency between interpreted and original language versions of speeches and statements.
• Assisting in the production of accurate translations of written and oral statements, media articles, and other documents from English to Russian and vice versa.
• Supporting the outreach program of the Group of independent experts on Belarus by providing necessary translation and interpretation services.
• Performing other related duties as required, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of translation and interpretation theories, concepts, and approaches relevant to the field. The ability to identify issues, analyze problems, and participate in their resolution is essential. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in data collection methods and possess conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research. A commitment to gender perspectives and the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work is crucial. Additionally, candidates should exhibit professionalism, effective communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree in translation, interpretation, languages, or a related field is required for this position. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. This educational background ensures that candidates have the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to perform effectively in the role.

Experience:
A minimum of 2 years of work experience in translation and/or interpretation is required, including experience gained through academic research work. Out of the 2 years, at least one year of experience within the United Nations Common Systems is desirable. Candidates with experience in providing translation or interpretation during investigations or on human rights-related subjects will be given preference, as this experience is directly relevant to the responsibilities of the position.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Russian is required for this position, as these are the primary languages used in the United Nations Secretariat. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency at UN Level III in reading, writing, listening, and speaking for both languages. Knowledge of French is an asset but not mandatory. The ability to communicate effectively in these languages is essential for the successful execution of the role's responsibilities.

This position is temporarily available until 30 September 2026, with the possibility of extension based on funding availability and the extension of the mandate. The role is subject to specific conditions, including the eligibility of candidates based at the duty station.
