Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading research institution established in 195
It is located in Geneva, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the world, representing more than 100 nationalities. The organization operates in multiple countries and is dedicated to pushing the frontiers of science and technology, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration.
Job Overview: The position of Electrical Engineer at CERN focuses on the safe operation of superconducting magnet circuits for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). This role is particularly suited for recent graduates or early-career engineers who are eager to gain hands-on experience in a highly collaborative and international research environment. The successful candidate will participate in various electrical test campaigns, contributing to the preparation and execution of electrical tests on HL-LHC magnets, interconnections, components, and circuits in test facilities. The role emphasizes the importance of rigorous electrical qualification at both room temperature and cryogenic conditions (1.9 K). The candidate will be supported by experienced colleagues, providing an excellent opportunity to develop both technical and analytical skills while working on cutting-edge research.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Electrical Engineer include:
Participating in the preparation and execution of electrical tests on HL-LHC magnets, interconnections, components, and circuits in test facilities.
Contributing to the improvement and documentation of test procedures to ensure high standards of quality and safety.
Supporting the investigation of non-conformities through fault diagnostics and data analysis to identify and resolve issues effectively.
Assisting in collecting, organizing, and analyzing electrical qualification data from internal teams and external collaborators to ensure comprehensive data management.
Processing, analyzing, and visualizing measurement data from superconducting circuits to derive meaningful insights and support decision-making.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have familiarity with one or more of the following areas: design or use of electrical test setups or laboratory equipment; basic commissioning or maintenance of electrical systems; electrical measurements and instrumentation; data analysis, including introductory statistical methods; high-voltage testing or electrical integrity checks; programming (e.g., Python, LabVIEW); data management (e.g., SQL or databases); and technical documentation or report writing. Exposure to superconducting systems or cryogenic environments is considered a plus, as is experience in developing measurement methods or test equipment.
Educational Background: The position requires candidates to hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field. Applicants without a university degree are not eligible, and those with a PhD are also not eligible for this position. Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should have graduated within the last two years to qualify for this role.
Experience: Candidates should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in the relevant field. This experience should ideally be in areas related to electrical engineering, particularly in roles that involve electrical testing, measurement techniques, or data analysis.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication within the diverse international team at CERN.
Additional Notes: The position is fully onsite and involves a contract duration of 24 months, with a possible extension of up to 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week. The target start date for this position is June 1, 202
The role may require interventions in underground installations, and candidates must possess a valid driving license. Additionally, the position may involve working during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as required by the needs of the organization. Candidates must also obtain medical clearance due to occupational health risks associated with the position. The compensation includes a monthly stipend between 5266-5793 Swiss Francs (tax-free), 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, a relocation package, and opportunities for on-the-job and formal training, including language classes.
