Job Overview:
The Urban Monitor will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of a project aimed at enhancing urban resilience in the State of Rio de Janeiro. This position involves close collaboration with UN-Habitat’s operational and technical teams, focusing on engaging youth in activities related to environmental sustainability, climate change, and urban resilience. The Urban Monitor will assist in organizing participatory activities, facilitate collaborative work dynamics, and support the development of proposals for resilient public spaces. The role requires a proactive approach to engage youth participants and ensure their active involvement in the project, contributing to the overall goal of promoting sustainable practices in urban communities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Urban Monitor will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including: 1) Supporting youth participants in developing narratives and audiovisual content related to environmental sustainability and urban resilience. 2) Assisting in identifying spatial challenges and opportunities in public spaces. 3) Organizing participatory activities for community mapping and local priority identification. 4) Facilitating gamified learning processes and maintaining participant engagement. 5) Supporting youth groups in developing ideas for resilient public spaces and documenting results. 6) Assisting in participatory mapping exercises to identify socio-environmental challenges. 7) Promoting inclusive participation and dialogue among participants. 8) Systematizing inputs from workshops and participatory design sessions. 9) Coordinating between participants, schools, and project teams to ensure continuity. 10) Providing logistical support for workshops and field visits. 11) Monitoring youth engagement during proposal development. 12) Promoting sustainable practices through educational activities. 13) Recording and systematizing data related to activities for monitoring and evaluation. 14) Supporting environmental education projects under the guidance of a Programme Analyst. 15) Completing required training courses, including the BSAFE security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security course from UNDSS. 16) Participating in missions as requested by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, along with at least two years of relevant technical experience. Experience in supporting workshops and educational activities related to youth and public space design in Brazil is essential. Additionally, candidates should have a background in community-based projects related to urban issues, environment, or social development. Experience in facilitating participatory activities and working with youth groups or community organizations is required. Familiarity with community outreach and mapping activities is also necessary. Desirable qualifications include experience in public space initiatives and previous work within the UN System.
Educational Background:
A high school diploma is required, and candidates with additional relevant technical experience beyond the diploma will be considered favorably. This educational background should be complemented by practical experience in related fields.
Experience:
A minimum of two years of experience is required, specifically in supporting workshops and educational activities related to youth and public space design. Candidates should have a proven track record of participation in community-based projects and experience in facilitating group activities and community engagement processes.
Languages:
Fluency in Portuguese is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication in Brazil. Proficiency in English and Spanish is also beneficial, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat, and Spanish is used in the Regional Office.
Additional Notes:
The position is based locally in Brazil, and only nationals or permanent visa holders may apply. The contract is for six months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability. The consultant will receive a monthly allowance upon approval of activity reports. Travel may be required for project-related activities, and all travel will be coordinated and financed by UN-Habitat according to UN travel guidelines.
