Job Overview:
The Computing engineer" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Technical Engineer will join the IT Department’s Fabric and Communication Systems (FCS) Group within the Data Centres (DC) Section at CERN. This role is crucial for the operation and support of CERN’s Data Centres and associated computing facilities. The section is responsible for managing the full lifecycle of computing equipment and developing, maintaining, and integrating software applications with existing facility monitoring systems. The successful candidate will play a key role during CERN’s Accelerator Long Shutdown 3 (LS3) and beyond, supporting major data centre expansion and upgrade projects aimed at significantly increasing hosting capacity to meet future computing demands. The position focuses on automating computing hardware diagnostics and enhancing repair service efficiency through improved operational procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Computing Technical Engineer include developing and implementing automation tools for hardware problem diagnostics to enhance response times and operational efficiency. The engineer will work closely with other computing services to maintain and enhance the automated commissioning system for computing hardware. They will provide and maintain clear procedures and guidelines to support the hardware repair team, ensuring efficient and consistent repair workflows. Additionally, the engineer will support data centre expansion and upgrade projects, assisting with the installation and testing of new equipment and the decommissioning of obsolete hardware. Maintaining accurate documentation of infrastructure assets, configurations, and procedures is also a key responsibility. Collaboration with IT teams, facilities staff, and external partners to deliver operational improvements and incident responses is essential.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. Strong knowledge of server hardware, networking fundamentals, and data centre infrastructure is required. Proven problem-solving skills and the ability to perform well under pressure are essential. Proficiency in Python and shell scripting for automation and diagnostics is necessary, along with experience working with Linux operating systems, including administration" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">system administration. Familiarity with monitoring and management tools used in data centre environments is also required. Excellent documentation skills and keen attention to detail are important, as well as strong communication skills and a collaborative team player mindset. Hands-on experience in data centre environments, automation frameworks, or computing hardware will be considered a strong asset.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered. The candidate should have a solid understanding of programming techniques and languages, as well as knowledge and deployment of computing hardware. Familiarity with the installation, operation, and maintenance (both preventive and corrective) of computing systems is also necessary.

Experience:
The position requires a strong level of experience in server hardware, networking fundamentals, and data centre infrastructure. Candidates should have proven problem-solving skills and the ability to perform well under pressure. Experience with Python and shell scripting for automation and diagnostics is essential, as well as experience working with Linux operating systems, including system administration. Familiarity with monitoring and management tools used in data centre environments is also important. Hands-on experience in data centre environments, automation frameworks, or computing hardware will be considered a strong asset.

Languages:
The mandatory language for this position is English, both spoken and written. Candidates should also have a commitment to learn French, which is considered a good to have language skill.

Additional Notes:
This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, with hybrid job flexibility. The role may require a valid driving licence and the ability to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays, as needed by the organization. Stand-by duty may also be required. The job grade is classified as 4-5, and the reference for this position is IT-FCS-DC-2026-69-LD.
