Job Overview: The Urban Planner will play a crucial role in supporting the project team to enhance the agency’s programmatic approach towards greening and resilience in urban settings, specifically in Sahab City. The position involves the delivery of key outputs such as the Green Public Space Plan Report in both English and Arabic, validation workshop reports, and feedback reports on pilot site-specific assessments. The Urban Planner will also contribute to an awareness-raising campaign package, which is essential for engaging the community and stakeholders in the project. This role is pivotal in ensuring that the project meets its objectives of promoting sustainable urban development and resilience-building in Sahab, addressing challenges related to urban growth, climate change, and social development.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Urban Planner will be responsible for a variety of tasks that include providing technical support through desktop research, drafting narrative sections and developing maps for the Green Public Space Plan, and translating the report into Arabic. The consultant will also assist in finalizing the Green Public Space Plan report, conduct technical reviews of pilot site-specific assessments, and contribute to the preparation of feedback reports. Additionally, the Urban Planner will help develop an awareness-raising campaign, support logistical preparations for workshops and meetings, prepare agendas and invitations, and create presentations. The role also involves preparing reports and minutes to facilitate the dissemination of project information to stakeholders engaged in project-related activities. The consultant will provide additional technical support as required within the project scope.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree in Architecture, Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Sustainable Urban Development, Geography, or a related field. A minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in urban development and planning, graphic design, or reporting in the local context is required. The ability to write technical reports, concept notes, and project documents is essential. Familiarity with urban data and experience in organizing local workshops and community engagement processes are desirable. Knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda is also advantageous, as is experience working with international development organizations.
Educational Background: The position requires a university degree in a relevant field such as Architecture, Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Sustainable Urban Development, Geography, or a related discipline. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of urban planning and development, as well as the technical aspects involved in creating sustainable urban environments.
Experience: The Urban Planner should have at least 2 years of relevant work experience in urban development and planning, which includes direct experience in graphic design and reporting. This experience should be within the local context, demonstrating a proven track record of working on similar projects or initiatives. Familiarity with community engagement processes and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders is also important.
Languages: Fluency in English and Arabic (both oral and written) is required for this position, as these are the primary languages used in the project. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
