Job Overview:
The Regional Director for the Americas will oversee the Regional Office's substantive work program and manage activities undertaken by the office and its country representatives. This role involves coordinating efforts across different areas within the Division and with other UN organizations, ensuring timely execution of programmed activities. The Director will lead the development and implementation of technical cooperation projects, maintain cooperation with Member States and various stakeholders, and ensure high-quality outputs from the Regional Office. The position requires strategic resource mobilization and effective communication to advocate for human rights in the Americas, while also managing administrative tasks necessary for the office's functioning.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Regional Director will be responsible for formulating and implementing the work program of the Regional Office, overseeing management activities, and ensuring timely execution of projects. Key responsibilities include directing and supervising the development of technical cooperation projects, maintaining cooperation with Member States and civil society, and ensuring high-quality outputs. The Director will also oversee budget preparation, staff recruitment, and performance evaluations, while fostering teamwork and communication among staff. Participation in international meetings and representing the Regional Office are also essential duties.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of human rights issues and the ability to apply UN rules and regulations effectively. Professionalism, communication skills, leadership abilities, and a vision for strategic issues are critical. The role requires a commitment to gender balance and the ability to manage performance effectively, delegating responsibilities and providing feedback to staff.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, human rights, political science, international relations, or a related area is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 15 years of progressively responsible experience, with a minimum of 10 years in human rights or a related field, preferably at the international level. Experience in a multi-cultural environment and supervisory, management, and leadership roles is essential. Familiarity with project management and strategic resource mobilization is desirable, along with experience in the Americas region or similar contexts.

Languages:
English and Spanish are required for this position, with proficiency at UN Level III for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is also a working language of the UN, but proficiency in French is not mandatory for this role.
