Job Overview:
The Senior Education Assistant will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of the Refugee Education 2030 strategy, which aligns with the Global Compact on Refugees. This position is vital for ensuring that refugee children and youth have equitable access to quality education in Chad. The Senior Education Assistant will work under the supervision of the Associate Community-Based Protection Officer and will be responsible for coordinating educational activities, monitoring educational standards, and providing technical support to UNHCR's education programs. The role involves regular visits to refugee camps, collaboration with local education authorities, and engagement with various stakeholders to enhance educational opportunities for refugees. The Senior Education Assistant will also be involved in promoting inclusive education practices and addressing the specific needs of vulnerable groups, including children with disabilities and girls. This position is essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to education and ensuring that refugee education is prioritized in humanitarian responses.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate and monitor educational activities implemented directly and through partners, including the distribution of school kits and tuition fees for vulnerable students, construction of classrooms, and tracking student enrollment and attendance.
  • Facilitate the establishment of ideas boxes and orientation training for school directors.
  • Assist in disseminating scholarship opportunities in refugee sites and participate in candidate selection.
  • Oversee the management of the digital learning center, including staff training and activity implementation in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education.
  • Implement financial education training programs.
  • Conduct awareness campaigns on the importance of education and continuing studies.
  • Coordinate with other education sector actors to adapt the Refugee Education Strategy to the local context.
  • Participate in coordination meetings and prepare reports on educational activities and challenges.
  • Monitor the implementation of education programs and provide guidance on orientation. 1
  • Identify training needs and train UNHCR staff and partners on refugee education priorities. 1
  • Assist in preparing and drafting education inputs for internal and external documents and reports.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a university degree in education, social work, or international development. Candidates must have at least two years of relevant professional experience in education programs, particularly in humanitarian or development contexts. Essential competencies include demonstrated work experience in educational program implementation, strong interpersonal skills for collaboration and coordination, and proficiency in French and Arabic. Desired qualifications include experience in refugee education programs, knowledge of UNHCR policies, and familiarity with child protection issues. Candidates should also possess excellent computer skills and be able to draft and document effectively.

Educational Background:
Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in education, social sciences, or a related field. A higher degree is preferred but not mandatory. The educational background should reflect a strong understanding of educational principles and practices, particularly in the context of humanitarian assistance and refugee education.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of two years of relevant work experience in education programs, with a focus on implementation and coordination in humanitarian settings. Experience working with government entities, particularly ministries of education, is essential. Candidates with experience in refugee education programs or child protection will have a competitive advantage.

Languages:
Fluency in French is mandatory, with excellent written and oral communication skills. Proficiency in Arabic is also required. Knowledge of English is considered an asset, particularly for candidates who may engage with international stakeholders or documentation.
