Job Overview:
The Associate Venture Debt Lawyer position is situated within the Legal Directorate of the EIB, specifically in the Operational Policy, Mandates and Non-EU Operations division. This role is pivotal in providing legal support for the Venture Debt Unit, which finances the growth of innovative companies across the EU. The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Division and the Head of Unit, as well as other legal professionals, to manage legal documentation and address legal issues related to venture debt, debt restructuring, and fund investments. The position requires regular office presence at the EIB headquarters in Luxembourg and may involve travel for negotiations and contract signings. The role is designed for a full-time commitment and offers a permanent contract at grade 4, with panel interviews expected in May 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Associate Venture Debt Lawyer include managing contacts and negotiations concerning EIB operations, drafting legal documents, providing advisory legal support, finalizing contracts, and ensuring compliance with legal formalities. The lawyer will also prepare terms of reference for external counsel, supervise their work, and contribute to the formulation of legal policies within the unit. Additionally, the role involves developing standard legal documentation for venture debt operations, conducting legal research, and maintaining constructive relationships with other directorates within the bank. The lawyer will follow internal approval processes related to assigned transactions and may need to handle multiple files simultaneously under pressure.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in law, equivalent to at least a Bachelor's degree, along with a professional legal qualification in either a civil or common law jurisdiction. A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience is required, preferably in banking and finance, gained through a reputable international firm or the in-house department of a financial institution. Significant experience in drafting and negotiating finance documentation in English is essential, and familiarity with French and/or German is considered an asset. Candidates should also have solid experience in structured finance or venture debt, along with the ability to work under pressure and manage multiple files effectively.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a university degree in law, which must be equivalent to at least a Bachelor's degree. A professional legal qualification in a civil or common law jurisdiction is also necessary to ensure that the candidate is well-versed in the legal frameworks relevant to the role.

Experience:
The position requires at least three years of relevant professional experience, ideally in the fields of banking and finance. This experience should preferably be acquired in a firm of international repute or within the in-house legal department of a financial institution. Candidates should demonstrate a strong background in drafting and negotiating finance documentation, particularly in English, and experience in structured finance or venture debt is advantageous.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, and candidates should also have a good command of French, as both languages are official working languages of the EIB. Knowledge of other EU languages will be considered an advantage. While a good command of French is not explicitly required for hire, it is essential for future career development within the organization, as proficiency in both languages is necessary for promotions and internal selection processes.
