Job Overview:
The Project Manager role at VSO involves managing project implementation while adhering to high-quality programming standards to meet project objectives aligned with VSO’s Volunteering for Development (VfD) approach. The position requires coordination with various stakeholders, including private sector actors such as recyclers and small to medium enterprises (SMEs), training institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and community-based structures (Idirs). The focus areas for this role include Solid Waste Management (SWM), circular economy initiatives, and environmental projects aimed at creating green jobs. The Project Manager will oversee project management tasks, budget planning, and ensure comprehensive project oversight from inception to completion, ensuring that all activities are executed effectively and efficiently to achieve desired outcomes.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Project Manager include:
  • Leading the planning and implementation of project activities in accordance with VSO’s VfD approach.
  • Coordinating with private sector partners, NGOs, and community organizations to facilitate collaboration and resource sharing.
  • Developing and managing project budgets, ensuring financial accountability and transparency.
  • Monitoring and evaluating project progress, making adjustments as necessary to meet objectives.
  • Reporting on project outcomes and impacts to stakeholders and VSO management.
  • Ensuring compliance with VSO’s policies and procedures throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Engaging with local communities to promote awareness and participation in project initiatives.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders to foster support for project goals.
  • Facilitating training and capacity-building sessions for community members and partners. 1
  • Identifying and mitigating risks associated with project implementation.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Project Manager position must possess the following qualifications:
  • Proven experience in project management, particularly in the fields of environmental sustainability, waste management, or community development.
  • Strong understanding of the principles of the circular economy and sustainable development.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency in project management tools and methodologies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on results-oriented outcomes.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should have a relevant educational background, including a degree in environmental science, project management, social sciences, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications in project management or sustainability are highly desirable and will be considered an asset.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of experience in project management, with a focus on environmental projects or community development initiatives. Experience working in developing countries or with marginalized communities is preferred, as is familiarity with the challenges and opportunities in the field of sustainable development.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication within VSO and with international partners. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Ethiopia is considered an advantage, as it will facilitate better engagement with community members and stakeholders.

This position is a full-time role with a fixed-term contract. The salary for this position is ETB 1,539,348.0
