Job Overview:
The Principal Environmental and Social Specialist will play a crucial role in supporting the EBRD's commitments under its Environmental and Social Policy. This position involves working closely with Associate Directors, Heads of Sector, and Directors within the Environment and Sustainability Division to ensure effective environmental and social appraisal and monitoring of the Bank's diverse portfolio of projects. The Principal will contribute specialist knowledge to assess complex and high-risk projects, ensuring compliance with environmental and social standards. The role requires collaboration with international teams and may involve travel to various countries where the EBRD operates. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing specific projects, conducting assessments, and contributing to the development of methodologies and internal processes.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Principal will be tasked with providing specialist input to various projects and Technical Cooperation initiatives, particularly those that are complex or high-risk. Responsibilities include managing project teams, conducting analytical reviews, developing methodologies, and ensuring compliance with environmental and social standards. The Principal will also coordinate with consultants, manage data, and prepare internal and external reports. Additionally, the role involves representing the ESD at various meetings and events, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to capacity-building initiatives. The Principal will be expected to support the continuous improvement of internal processes and procedures, ensuring effective data management and reporting.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field, or have comparable professional experience. A proven track record in appraising complex environmental and social risks is essential, along with knowledge of international environmental and social standards. Familiarity with financing instruments and policies of international financial institutions is also required. Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently or as part of a team, and excellent time management skills are crucial for this role. Candidates should demonstrate effective communication skills, both written and verbal, and have the ability to engage with a wide range of stakeholders.

Educational Background:
A relevant degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field is required. Candidates with comparable professional experience may also be considered. Advanced degrees or certifications in environmental management or social sciences would be advantageous.

Experience:
Candidates should have substantial experience in environmental and social risk assessment, project management, and leading multidisciplinary teams. Experience in negotiating and influencing stakeholders in complex environments is essential. The ability to mentor and coach less experienced staff is also a key requirement for this position.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Familiarity with a language spoken in the EBRD countries of operation is advantageous, and for positions based in local offices, fluency in the local language is required.
