Job Overview:
The Agricultural Officer (Seed Specialist) position is integral to the Seeds and Plant Genetic Resources Team (NSPGD) within the NSP. This role focuses on enhancing seed value chains, particularly for Special Agricultural Products (SAPs), by ensuring farmers have timely access to quality seeds and planting materials. The position requires collaboration with countries and partners to safeguard plant genetic resources and improve crop varieties that are resilient to environmental stresses. The officer will also be responsible for leading multidisciplinary teams and contributing to the development of methodologies and tools that support the planning and implementation of agricultural programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Agricultural Officer (Seed Specialist) will have a wide range of responsibilities, including:
  • Leading components of multidisciplinary teams and participating in internal committees and project teams.
  • Developing technical, analytical, and monitoring frameworks to support program implementation.
  • Conducting research and data analysis to inform policy proposals and technical standards.
  • Providing technical assistance and solutions to decentralized offices and field projects.
  • Collaborating on capacity development activities and ensuring quality in knowledge sharing initiatives.
  • Advocating for best practices and promoting international cooperation at meetings.
  • Engaging in resource mobilization activities aligned with FAO's strategic goals.
  • Coordinating the design and monitoring of projects related to resilient seed value chains.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in crop science, plant science, agriculture, agronomy, seed science and technology, or related biological and agricultural sciences with a focus on seed systems. Additionally, candidates should have at least seven years of relevant experience in seed production, quality assurance, seed value chains, and seed legal frameworks. Proficiency in English and intermediate knowledge of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is also required.

Educational Background:
The position requires an advanced university degree, specifically a Master’s degree or equivalent, in fields related to crop science, plant science, agriculture, agronomy, or seed science and technology. The educational background should emphasize knowledge of seed systems and their role in sustainable agriculture.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of seven years of relevant experience in the field of seed production and quality assurance, as well as experience in managing seed value chains and understanding seed legal frameworks. Experience in field positions and working in multiple locations or areas of work is desirable, as it enhances the candidate's ability to address diverse agricultural challenges.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, with a requirement for intermediate knowledge of another FAO official language such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish.
