Job Overview:
The Biodiversity Knowledge Management and Learning Consultant will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) through the Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded Biodiversity Enabling Activities: Global Biodiversity Framework - Early Action Support project (EAS). This position involves identifying and applying knowledge management activities to enhance the delivery of technical support to countries. The consultant will work closely with the Nature Frameworks Support Unit and will be responsible for mapping existing knowledge activities, conducting needs assessments, and developing interventions to address knowledge management needs. The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including the CBD Secretariat and other partners, to ensure effective implementation of biodiversity strategies and action plans.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Map existing and planned knowledge activities and materials of key partners, identifying opportunities for collaboration under the GEF 8 NBSAP Update and 7th National Report project.
  • Review outputs produced under the GEF 8 project, including NBSAPs and 7th National Reports, and provide a summary analysis of approaches taken and knowledge needs.
  • Conduct a needs assessment to identify country needs related to knowledge management, utilizing information from surveys and interviews with UNEP-supported country project leads.
  • Develop interventions to meet key knowledge management needs based on the mapping and needs assessment.
  • Determine how UNEP should track and assess the use of knowledge materials produced under the EAS and NBSAP/7NR projects, providing recommendations and revising tracking tools as necessary.
  • Prepare a final report summarizing actions undertaken, deliverables achieved, and lessons learned during the consultancy period.

Required Qualifications:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in knowledge management, social or behavioral sciences, communications, international development, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in developing knowledge management strategies and mechanisms is required, along with experience in reviewing and analyzing national, regional, and global knowledge management strategies and plans.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in a relevant field such as knowledge management, social or behavioral sciences, communications, or international development. Alternatively, a first-level university degree with additional qualifying experience may be considered.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in the field of knowledge management, particularly in developing strategies and interventions. Candidates should have experience in reviewing and analyzing knowledge management strategies at various levels, including national and global contexts, and should be familiar with monitoring and reporting activities related to these strategies.

Languages:
Fluency in English (written and oral) is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in French (written and oral) is desirable, and knowledge of Portuguese or another UN official language is considered an advantage.
