Job Overview: The Scientific Information Support Officer will play a crucial role in the cataloguing, curation, and quality control of CERN’s scientific outputs across various repositories. This position involves ensuring compliance with established metadata standards and supporting researchers in their submissions to the institutional repository. The officer will also collaborate with IT on repository developments and migration projects, oversee issue tracking and workflow efficiency related to library services, and contribute to innovation and service improvement initiatives. Additionally, the role includes training and supervising apprentices, interns, and colleagues, as well as engaging in user services and outreach activities. This position is integral to maintaining the high standards of information management and library services at CERN, ensuring that the scientific community has access to quality resources and support.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Catalogue, curate, and ensure the quality, completeness, and compliance of CERN’s scientific outputs across the CERN Document Server, INSPIRE, and the CERN Library Catalogue.
Support researchers with submissions to the institutional repository and collaborate with IT on repository developments and migration.
Oversee issue tracking and workflow efficiency related to repository and library services.
Contribute to innovation and service improvement projects, such as AI-assisted curation, and develop documentation, procedures, and performance indicators.
Train and supervise apprentices, interns, and colleagues on cataloguing and library practices.
Collaborate with external partners to enhance library services.
Contribute to user services, physical collection management, communication, outreach activities, and other operational needs of the Archives & Library.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Information Science or a related field. They should have demonstrated professional experience working with information management systems and institutional repositories. Proven hands-on experience applying cataloguing standards and metadata formats is essential. Additionally, documented experience managing and curating scientific documents within international, academic, or research organizations is required. Experience with large-scale migrations of records to new repositories and metadata schemas is beneficial, as is familiarity with library and documentation management, customer service, and digitizing collections.
Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree in Information Science or a related field is required. Candidates with equivalent relevant experience may also be considered. The educational background should include knowledge of cataloguing standards, metadata formats, and information management systems.
Experience: The position requires demonstrated professional experience in information management systems and institutional repositories. Candidates should have proven hands-on experience with cataloguing standards and managing scientific documents. Experience in large-scale migrations of records and metadata schemas is advantageous, as is experience in customer service and library management.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, with a commitment to learn French being highly desirable. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, enhancing communication within the diverse CERN community.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job offers hybrid flexibility. The job grade is classified as 4-5, and the reference for this position is OSI-SIS-AL-2026-55-LD. CERN offers a competitive salary that is tax-free, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances. There is also the possibility to extend the contract up to 8 years and eligibility for indefinite contract tenure.
