Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
  • It is located in Geneva, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the world, representing more than 100 nationalities. The organization operates in multiple countries and is dedicated to pushing the frontiers of science and technology, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration.

Job Overview:
The position focuses on advanced beam dynamics studies, particularly in relation to the TWOCRYST experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The successful candidate will analyze data from a fixed-target setup using bent crystals, supporting studies for future experiments. This role involves evaluating necessary machine modifications and timelines, working closely with detector and instrumentation teams to investigate beam-matter interactions, crystal channeling, and background sources. Following additional data collection in 2026, the candidate will analyze beam measurements and assess future performance, integrating modeling, simulation, and experimental data to contribute to the Physics Beyond Colliders initiative at CERN.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities include conducting beam dynamics simulations to understand beam loss and collimation processes, analyzing past and future LHC data collected with the double-crystal setup, and designing future layouts for fixed-target setups. The candidate will also be expected to engage with the wider modeling community, work independently on complex technical topics, and contribute to the design studies for future LHC fixed-target experiments.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong knowledge of Accelerator Physics, particularly in linear and non-linear beam dynamics. Experience with computing techniques relevant to Accelerator Physics is essential. Strong programming and scripting skills in languages such as Python, C++, or other scientific computing languages are required. The ability to work independently while effectively engaging with a broader community is crucial, as is a genuine interest in beam collimation and beam loss studies for accelerators.

Educational Background:
A professional background in Physics, Engineering, or a related field is required. Candidates should have either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. It is important that candidates have not previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a professional background in relevant fields, with specific experience levels depending on their educational qualifications. Those with a Master's degree should have 2 to 6 years of experience, while PhD holders should have up to 3 years of experience in a related area.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language being a plus. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication within the diverse CERN community.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration is set for 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The position requires a commitment of 40 hours per week and is fully onsite. The target start date for this position is June 1, 202
  • The role may involve working during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as required by the organization's needs. The job reference is BE-ABP-NDC-2026-77-GRAP, and it falls under the field of Applied Physics. Compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 6372 to 7004 Swiss Francs, which is tax-free, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances. Additionally, on-the-job and formal training, including language classes, will be provided.
