Job Overview: The Associate in the Environment & Sustainability Division (ESD) will play a crucial role in supporting the Bank's commitments under its Environmental and Social Policy. This position involves working independently with Principals and Associate Directors to deliver on environmental and social appraisal and monitoring of the Bank's portfolio of projects across various sectors. The Associate will primarily focus on low-risk sectors and projects, ensuring compliance with environmental and social standards while driving sustainable development initiatives. The role requires collaboration with banking teams and other departments to assess gaps in policy provisions and develop solutions that enhance environmental and social impacts. The Associate will also contribute to sustainability reporting, ensuring data accuracy and quality, and will coordinate Technical Cooperation (TC) activities, managing workflows and project cycles effectively. This position is integral to the ESD Monitoring team, which oversees a portfolio of over 2,000 investment projects and leads the digitalization of data management processes.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Associate will be responsible for a range of tasks, including: conducting assessments of Environmental and Social Policy (ESP) compliance, evaluating environmental and social risks and impacts, and developing methodologies for monitoring outputs and outcomes. The role involves managing data, reviewing internal and external publications, and supporting negotiations of environmental and social contract terms. The Associate will also coordinate meetings and events, engage with stakeholders at various levels, and contribute to building internal and external capacity on environmental and social matters. Additionally, the Associate will prepare internal and external reports, streamline data management processes, and ensure timely delivery of Technical Cooperation projects, acting as a Co-Operational Lead when necessary.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field, or have comparable professional experience. They should have experience in appraising environmental and social risks and impacts across various projects and sectors. Knowledge of international environmental, social, and climate standards is essential, including familiarity with the EBRD Environmental and Social Requirements, IFC Performance Standards, and other relevant guidelines. Strong analytical skills, effective time management, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are crucial for success in this role.
Educational Background: A relevant degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field is required. Candidates with comparable professional experience may also be considered. A strong academic background in environmental and social policy, climate change, or sustainability is advantageous.
Experience: Candidates should have demonstrable experience in assessing environmental and social risks and impacts, as well as familiarity with financing instruments and processes. Experience working in a multicultural environment and building effective relationships with clients and colleagues is highly valued. Proven analytical and quantitative skills are essential for this role.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Familiarity with a language of the EBRD countries of operations is advantageous, and local language fluency is required for resident office appointments.
