Job Overview: The Remote Sensing and GIS Specialist will play a crucial role in supporting the development of two significant projects in Djibouti: the Djibouti MSP and the Djibouti GBFF projects. The primary function of this position is to contribute to the UNEP-harmonized CEO Endorsement/Approval Package and all required Annexes/Appendices for these projects. The consultant will utilize their expertise in remote sensing and GIS to revitalize natural ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, and establish new terrestrial protected areas. This role requires a deep understanding of Integrated Landscape Management (ILM) and the ability to apply geospatial modeling techniques to guide conservation efforts. The specialist will also be responsible for generating knowledge on best practices in ILM and establishing robust monitoring and evaluation systems to assess project performance and inform adaptive management strategies.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Remote Sensing and GIS Specialist include:
Supporting the development of the UNEP-harmonized CEO Endorsement/Approval Package for the Djibouti MSP and GBFF projects.
Conducting geospatial modeling and analysis to characterize biodiversity and guide conservation prioritization.
Implementing community-based and gender-responsive conservation measures in collaboration with local stakeholders.
Establishing participatory governance and co-management mechanisms for new terrestrial protected areas.
Generating and disseminating knowledge on ILM best practices and lessons learned from project implementation.
Developing and maintaining monitoring, data management, and evaluation systems to assess project outcomes and inform future actions.
Collaborating with the Djibouti Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development and other partners to ensure effective project execution.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a 1st level degree in GIS or a related field, along with additional experience in remote sensing. A minimum of 8 years of professional experience in biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, protected areas management, or related fields is essential. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in Africa and strong skills in GIS software and satellite data analysis. Experience working with international organizations, particularly UNEP and the GEF, is also desired.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess at least a 1st level degree in GIS or a related field. Additional qualifications or certifications in remote sensing or environmental science will be considered an asset. Continuous professional development in relevant areas is encouraged to stay updated with the latest technologies and methodologies in GIS and remote sensing.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience in fields such as biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, protected areas management, or natural resource management. Experience in working on projects related to climate change and sustainable development is also valuable. Candidates with a proven track record of successful project implementation in Africa will be given preference.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. A working knowledge of French is desirable, as it will facilitate communication and collaboration with local stakeholders and partners in Djibouti, where both English and French are commonly used.
