Job Overview: The Head of Engineering Services Department (ESD) will play a crucial role in leading and managing the engineering resources necessary for the success of the ITER Project. This position involves supporting the ITER Senior Management Team in achieving project objectives while adhering to the ITER Agreement and regulations. The successful candidate will act as the main Engineering Resource Provider, ensuring that the organization has the necessary engineering manpower with the appropriate competencies. The role requires effective management of engineering resources, strategic planning, and collaboration with various departments to ensure the successful execution of engineering and assembly activities. The Head of ESD will also represent the organization at a senior level, promoting a unified team spirit and addressing any emerging issues that may impact project timelines or quality standards.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Head of ESD include:
Collaborating with other departments to develop strategies and forecast resources for engineering and assembly activities.
Leading the ESD by managing resources to support project milestones and maximizing human capital.
Providing effective leadership to motivate and develop team members.
Maintaining and sharing engineering expertise to prepare for future phases of the ITER project.
Coordinating engineering support in mechanical and plant areas, ensuring alignment with project priorities.
Representing the organization internally and externally, fostering collaboration among stakeholders.
Responding to emerging issues with timely solutions and alerting the Director-General of any potential risks to project timelines or quality.
Undertaking additional duties as required, in line with the primary responsibilities.
Required Qualifications: The essential qualifications for this position include extensive managerial experience in the design and construction of complex projects, particularly at a senior management level within large construction or scientific projects. Candidates should demonstrate experience in implementing a matrix organizational structure and managing engineering resources effectively. Desirable qualifications include experience in the design and construction of research infrastructures, particularly in the nuclear field, and technical knowledge of Tokamak machines and fusion facilities. Candidates should also possess strong leadership skills, the ability to drive organizational change, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive work environment.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold a Master's or PhD degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Nuclear, or equivalent). Additional certifications in project management are desirable. Extensive professional experience in relevant fields may substitute for formal educational qualifications, provided that the candidate has demonstrated similar work responsibilities and possesses relevant training certificates.
Experience: Candidates should have extensive experience in a managerial capacity, particularly in the design and construction of complex projects. Proven experience at a senior management level within large construction, scientific, or technical projects is essential. Experience in managing engineering resources in a matrix organization and leading organizational change is also required.
Languages: Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.
Additional Notes: The position offers an initial employment contract of up to five years, with the possibility of extension.
