Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading research institution established in 195
It is located in Geneva, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists and engineers from around the world. The organization operates in multiple countries, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration in the pursuit of scientific knowledge. CERN's mission is to push the frontiers of science and technology, contributing to our understanding of the universe through cutting-edge research and development.
Job Overview: The Graduate Engineer position is part of the High-Intensity ECN3 project at CERN, which focuses on designing a new facility for the SHiP experiment. The role involves engineering design and production of beam intercepting devices along the beamline, as well as assisting in the development of a high-power Target. The successful candidate will engage in thermo-mechanical and CFD studies on various components, including beam stoppers and collimators. This position requires collaboration with designers, physicists, and engineers to ensure that engineering specifications align with physics requirements. The engineer will also be responsible for presenting project updates, conducting literature research, and supporting procurement and construction activities. Additionally, the role includes hands-on work, developing scripts for CAE operations, and exploring AI-related tools and methods.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Graduate Engineer will carry out engineering studies related to beam-intercepting devices for the ECN3 HI project. Responsibilities include collaborating with designers and engineers, presenting project updates, performing FEA thermo-mechanical studies, conducting CFD analyses, proposing conceptual designs, conducting literature research, assisting in design and procurement, writing procurement documents, and supporting technicians during production. The engineer will also develop scripts and tools for the section and promote AI-related initiatives.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong technical understanding of mechanical engineering principles, particularly in heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and material science. Proficiency in relevant FEA software tools, such as Ansys or equivalent, is essential. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are required to facilitate collaboration, along with a proactive problem-solving mindset. Candidates should demonstrate autonomy in handling technical tasks, strong organizational skills, and a hands-on approach to support technical activities. An interest in code development, machine learning, and AI is also desirable.
Educational Background: Applicants must have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field. Candidates without a university degree are not eligible, and those with a PhD are also not eligible for this position. The educational qualification must be completed by the application deadline.
Experience: Candidates should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in the relevant fields. This experience should be directly related to mechanical engineering or applied physics, ensuring that the candidate is well-prepared for the responsibilities of the role.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates must demonstrate a commitment to learning French. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.
Additional Notes: The position is fully onsite and involves working in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations. A valid driving license is required.
